The most common causes are a vacuum leak or a sick Idle Air Control solenoid (IAC).
You can check for a vacuum leak by CAREFULLY spraying carb cleaner or Ether (starting fluid) around the vacuum lines and intake gasket areas, BUT only do this after a careful visual inspection has not shown any problems.
In the absence of any vacum leaks, the IAC solenoid is suspect. They are very easy to replace, and are not expensive. I suggest that ONLY Ford/Motorcraft electrical parts be used due to thei higher quality and similar price.
