I wasnt sure where to put this, since there isnt really an "exhaust section" at least that i could find, but anyway..
I just bought a full catback setup from borla for my 92 camaro, and i was under the impression that it came with clamps to connect all the pipes, intermediate, everything together but then i was seeing various pictures on the net of people with the same systems that have them welded.
My question is, is this necessary to have it welded at a muffler shop, or does it come with the clamps to connect it, and what are the benifits of getting everything welded together if it isnt a must.
Mainly wondering becuase the borla set me back close to $800 and i dont really have $400 laying around to get it all welded up at the muffler shop right now, and i really dont feel like letting it sit in the box until i do get that $400.
Thanks guys

You posted in the wrong place!!!!!
just kiddin.....anyways,
Welding as opposed to clamps is leak proof, and with clamps you almost always have some leaking......Its also stronger.
Clamping is OK......but personnally Id weld.

Whats the problem with leaking though, i mean as long as its getting out it doesnt really matter right, thats the whole point of an exhaust correct?
But anyway, i should be fine just clamping it until i have the cash to get it all welded up right

no, the velocity is thrown off, thus you arnt getting the performance you paid 800 for.
if you dont have the right velocity, it can even burn out valves *really doubt it would happen in this case*.
I would get it welded...and to weld up something like that I dont see it being 400...

Well since you already started a thread about this then I'll just reply to your PM you sent me through here instead.
As it's already been explained thus far, it is better to have your exhaust welded. Primarily, the reason why I went to get mine all welded together and why it cost $400, was because, 1) I wanted to have it done right the first time, and 2) Because the cat-back system I have (and apparently the one you just ordered) is designed for the LT1/LS1's. So, it takes a little fabrication and custom bent piping to get it to fit right. Not to mention the shop had to make an adapter piece that goes from the 3" exhaust to the 2 1/2" header y-pipe. And I also got them to get one last bolt into my header flange that I couldn't get myself. So.. all in all, custom bent piping, pipe size adapter, and finishing installing my header + labor = $400. The guy was cool and was like alright man I'll do all that for ya for $400. I wasn't about to argue with him because that was a lot of work they did and they did an awesome job on it. So to me it was well worth the price. So, in all honesty, unless you know someone who can weld you up some custom S shaped bent piping then you're probably going to have to have it installed by an exhaust shop.

Hm, well i have the 305 tbi not the v6 pontiac... so maybe it will fit mine a bit better then it did yours without custom fabrication.
I was just really feeling doing it myself, as ive been learning as i go and it just feels better to do it yourself, i did need an adapter made also, but i was fine with letting the shop do that.

400 is very pricy for a cat-back install. If you can put the whole thing together with the clamps and the adapter it should only cost 40-80 bucks to get it all welded together. It's not much work at all to weld the whole thing up.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking, if i do get it all put up with clamps, then drive it down to the muffler shop like that im sure id save cash on getting it welded from there, then haveing them take it out of the box and everything and hagning it and everything. So all theyd have to do was take the clamps off and weld, so im sure id save cash, and also feel as if i did it myself
Im pretty confident that i wont need anything custom done except the adapter, ive talked to a bunch of people with 92 camaros and they all said the borla fit perfect, if not better then the stock catback (not sure how thats possable)
Not sure why borla would make the same product for ls lt and lb setups.. maybe you were mininformed on that one hoss

The problem with welding is that is rusts.. you have stainless steel piping with non stainless steel welds.. the welds rust then snap.. from personal experience I would go with the clamps if you can.

Since you want to do it yourself and learn................why not just go out and buy a small portable wire feed welder that uses flux core wire and do it yourself?? That way you get the satisfaction of a do it yourself job and you will have the welder to keep for other jobs or repairs for a lot less than $400 bucks

if you dont want to weld it then why dont you just go buy some clamps and adapters? Im not understanding why it wouldnt fit. And like what was said 400 dollars is wayy to expensive for a catback install. midas charged me 120

I was just starting to consider the weld job, since ive been hearing its a lot less then $400, and it makes sence about the leaking, but then i heard somebodoy just now say the welds rust... and since my car isnt stored in a garage every night and is exposed to the elements, whats the rundown on that?

Im really just thinking about takeing it to the shop, i dont have a lift, but i do have a jack, so id have to find a good spot to jack it up at and get on a creeper and do the whole thing like that, witch doesnt sound to easy, also im not sure how rusty the rubber hangers are going to be and everything else and how easy its going to be getting it all off, so im really just starting to think i should just take it to the shop but on the other hand i really want to do it myself for obvious reasons, anyone have any input?

Take it to the shop and get it done right.......save time.
Just imagine something falling out after you do it yourself.......but if a muffler shop attaches it wrong and something happens, its probably covered

Yeah, im gonna go down to this place that does custom exhaust tomorrow by my house and get a rough estimate and see when i can get it done, they were already going to be doing the adapater, mite as well just have them put it all on and weld it up.
Do the welds really rust though?

Theyll rust......but right after you get it done spray something on em to prevent rusting, go to your local auto store and youll find something. Its a pretty simple solution.

Probably not, you see you have to get something that can withstand the heat, and I dont think acrylic will, just buy a can of paint that can.......I bought some for my exhaust the other day, only like 7 bucks. They make different colors to, I chose black. It looks sweet, just finished today. Although I think I got high from the crap in it....lol IT STUNK!!!!!!!!
I hope your over 18 otherwise they wont sell it to you too.
Ill try and get the name tomorrow.......

I agree with Bag91. unless you have a full shop at home with the knowledge, I would take it in to someone who has the experience. I know how you feel though, nothing feels better than putting something together yourself. But in this case, I think you would want to CYA.

Im assuming that the borla exhaust is stainless steel.
If it is welded with a high alloy (nickle content) wire it wont rust.

Now that I think about it........I dont think the welds will rust....only the hooks. At least thats what mine are doing......But I dont really care because the muffler shop will replace the hooks for free when they break.
