Okay- long story, will try to keep it short. I have a '90 Escort LX- 156,000 kms on it. Jan 2005, my car began 'bogging' when accelerating. it was almost like it was 'braking' on me.
Brought to mechanics, ran diagnostics. was advised my tranny was slipping. no quote given, had it all back together assuming i was not going to fix it. :screwy:
So- they tell me the distributor was full of something - oil? they cleaned it out. Entire 40 min drive home- car ran fine.
Next day- bogged again. went to local mechanic and this is where the REAL fun begins .
They ran diagnositics, no code showed up. they tell me fuel pump. They change fuel pump, car drove like a dream :)
6months later, bogs- take it in, they clean out the fuel injector- said it was dirty, car ran fine . 3 months ago (Dec)- bogged- they said damp, it had been slushy from snow and wet- and sent me on my way expecting me to accept the car will bog. didn't bog after that.
Feb- 2006- last month- bogs. I call them and they say bring it in in 2 days. but...next day- car won't start. ??? they come over, say fuel pump- no humming, no gas running thru.
They keep car for a few days, tell me fuel pump replaced- . car runs and i'm in 13th month since last- therefore no warranty:banghead:
2 days later- bogs. replace . 2 days later- bogs. replace
Gonna fast forward now. 4 fuel pumps later- . They burned out my ignition switch- cost me for that..and they finally said to me this last time- they found a cracked wire. So- n/c FINALLY something n/c.
Car idles now very rough, whole hood shakes. sounds like it'll stall. when warms up, drives fine. accelerates fine - like a dream now. very smooth. but when you release the gas a bit, it bogs back down. Now, my check engine comes on and only if driving after 20 minutes it comes on. goes off and comes right back on.
a few days ago- car wouldn't start- stranded at work- and next day- it started no problem. ????
My concerns are time going by and not doing anything could cost me something later.
Why my check engine light now when fuel pump now working properly? or is it?
Would LOVE any ideas on this- i'm now out of money, out of time off work, and out of patience. I feel i have been either taken advantage of, or they really are as frustrated as they say because they can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance, look forward to getting replies on this.

There are some simple things to take a look at before getting into the high dollar repairs. When it bogs down it is simply fuel starvation. Replace the fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter will take it's toll on a fuel pump. With no place to go the fuel pressure will build up in the pump causing premature failure.
Try some fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas.
If it hasn't been done yet replace the spark plugs and wires. They could be shorting out.
Replace the PCV valve. It should be done every 60,000 miles.
Put on a new timing belt. If the old one has jumped a few teeth it will make it bog down when trying to accelerate. Your car has the interference motor and if the belt breaks, the valves will hit the pistons. They reccomend that this be done every 60,000 miles.
Clean and tighten the battery post terminals. The battery is the "heart" of your car. If it is marginal the whole rest of the car will be marginal.
