Was sold to us as a front-wheel drive..not 4WD. It has no switch. Went to get tires on it and was told it was a 4WD. We then figured out it was an AWD. When turning, we would hear some clicking noises. We had it checked out and they told us we needed a front axle and if it broke before then it was no big deal because of the AWD. It finally broke, we had it fixed. One week after driving down the highway the drive shaft in the front came loose and punched a hole in the transmission. Now I need a new transmission and transfer case!

They took off the drive shaft. My question is...can I somehow make it a front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive and not AWD or do I have to replace the drive shaft for an AWD?

AWD stands for all wheel drive.
You will need all 4 wheels hooked up.
As you found out do not wait untill it breaks to fix it.
You are stuck with fixing it or taking it back and getting something else.
I would vote for getting something else.

One other thing you could do is to just put a 2 wheel drive transmission in it and forget the 4 wheel.
It would require some changing on rear drive shaft and crossmember and so on.
