Transmission is not shifting into 3rd gear. It slips and when you give it some power it finally catches. I checked the fluid it's foamy and it goes a couple of inches up the dip stick.

No 3rd can be:

- 3/4 Clutch pack is toast
- 2-4 Band is not being released (Servo)
- 3-4 shift solenoid, 3-4 shift valve

and other reasons. The fact that the fluid is foamy and overfilled is not good either.

Driving it while the tranny is slipping is not a good thing. It might be a good idea to have the pan pulled and inspected.

Good luck.

Is it setting any codes?
What trans and mileage year and engine?
May be a good time to service trans filter and fluid.
Take a note on what is in bottom of the transmission pan?
Does the fluid level hit the full mark when hot?

Foamy fluid can be from:

- over filled
- contaminated fluid (mixing with radiator coolant)
- fluid is very old
- fluid is getting very hot

When was the last time the fluid and filter was changed?

What model are you running? 1500 or 2500, the 1500 came standard with a 46L60E Transmission, this transmission is notorious for it's failures when used in utility vehicles. It's actually meant for performance racing, it's used in the mid-90's Camaro's and Firebirds. If you have 2500, then you probrably have the 4L80E and that model is rock solid. Check your fluid pan, if you have a lot of metal particle goo on the bottom, you definitely need a new Transmission.

Good Luck
