Check the idler or tensioner pulley it usually will produce a high pitched whine when it starts to go bad. Not difficult to replace either one.

Pull off the serp belt and turn the pulleys by hand. The one that feels gritty or has too much side play is the one making noise. Also check the water pump for signs of coolant seepage from one of the "weep holes" in the casting behind the pulley.

not to jack the thread but while we are talking about tensioners. on a NA 3800 S II you have to replace that whole chunk of aluminum (heater hose pass thru) to service the tensioner?

Yes, you can replace just the pulley if that's all that is bad, but if the tensioner arm is starting to separate or not holding enough tension, the entire bracket needs to be changed. There is coolant running through that bracket as well, (what were the engineers thinking?!?!?!?) so if you need to change it, check the rest of the cooling system while you're at it (t-stat, hoses, etc...) so you don't have to bleed the system twice.

Well, mine is doing the same exact thing and I turned the new pulley I put on and that is causing the noise. I put a 3.0'' pulley on my car and I purchased it from pfyc.com. How do I go about changing the entire bracket....
