power/shifting problems..... after hours on road

Hey guys, I've got a 94 rodeo, v6,4x4. I've had it a few months, highly reliable, the previous owner took well care of it, etc. High milage, 170.

Ok, heres the problem, She whipps around town without any problems, but a few weeks ago i took a temp job down in florida, on the drive down, about 6 hours into it, going through the mountings of West VA, i started noticing serious power loss, and if i gave her more gas, shed just blow out black smoke and act as though she was about to stall. Had to pull over and sleep for the night to wait for amechanic to take a look at it, he though he found the problem in teh gas filter, so we just bypassed it.
Off I went and about 3 hours later, same problem again, luckily i was out of the hills and on straight road, so as long as i found a sweet spot on the pedal, i was ok. I noticed shifting problems if i slowed down, tried to coast, or when stopping for gass, but once i got her up around 80 again, she was ok.
Now down in florida now, again, she seems fine whipping around town... though, i do notice.... once in a while, if really looking for it, after accelerating and coasting, i do notice a little burp I guess I call it, the tech will bounce up and down and you can feel a minor push pull untill it finally evens out. I'm concerned because in a few weeks, i've got to jhead back to NY.
It doesnt seem mechanical, rather a sensor perhaps. At first, i thought it seems real similiar to my TPS (throttle position sensor) I had my SC, but the more I thought about it, and really only being noticable after several hours of driving, I was starting to think perhaps a blocked catalitic converter. But again, the mild shifting issue i notice once in a while now, doestn back that up.
Sound familiar to anyone????? I'd appreciate the response, I'm out of state so dont have free net access, (had to go to library), feel free to drop me your guess to [email protected], I can read it off my phone at least.

If you send me a guess, also let me know a quick way to check it, for instance, it's a throttle sensor, what should happen if I pull it, etc. Thanks guys, really appreciate it, funds are tight, thats why I had to travel, and last thing I want is to have to take it to a dealer, they probobly wont get it right anyways.... Thanks again. E
