Installed a new muffler

Well I bit the bullet. I have pondered numerous things to put on my 99' Blazer 4x4 LS. There were catbacks, mufflers, or leave it stock. I just chose replacing the muffler.

I hunted around a Midas for a Ravin Z55. But it was 3" in and 3" out. And they wanted about 350 bucks for everything. I about crapped myself this morning.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Gibson catback or a Dynomax Super Turbo kit.

Instead I opted for a Flo-pro Soundpro. I think that is it. I left stock piping in. The muffler itself was 43 bucks and installation was like 35 bucks. In & out of the shop in 30 minutes.

The result is much nicer over stock. There is a deeper grumble when you start it up. When idling at a red light you can hear the low grumble in the cabin. It gets a louder when you mash the gas. At highway speeds it is barely noticable. I wasn't interested in something that will deafen me but for the smooth sound.

Now for the performance. I can feel that my Blazer is enjoying the new muffler. Acceleration is significantly smoother around the 2500 to 3500 RPM range. Before I could feel it bogging down a little. Not anymore. I idle about 100 rpm lower. I have good pickup when I give it that gas even at 55mph. I was able to squeel the tires at a red light shortly after the installation upon take off.

Now I am going to have to look in the cold air intakes. Ebay seems like my best choice hear. Chromeintakes is a vendor that ppl are recommending quite well. I talked to the guy who was doing the muffler there and he said the K&N FIPK on his 03' Silverado resulted in about 4 mpg when he stuck on one.

But for right now I have a K&N drop in filter. I am going to remove the stock box and try how it will feel with a cold air simulation. But first I will have to reset the ECM here shortly.

I know some of you want sound clips. I will have to try setting my laptop up nearby for a recording. I will have to see how the weather ends up here this evening first.

This muffler makes it sound like a V8 under the hood. But it doesn't do it in a loud annoying way. You will have listen to the clips to see.

As a newbie who has spent hours and hours pouring over this forum, I'm still not convinced that "oiled" filters (K&N-type) are the way to go. The replacement cost of that MAF sensor bothers me a lot. Yes, if you are lucky, you can successfully clean the MAF (OOPS! That's gonna be expensive.) but cleaning would likely come after a period of crappy performance/lowering MPG/money down the drain. Is there no middle ground here? Is there no filter better than stock that will not (potentially) do hundreds of $$ damage?

K&N is perfectly safe if you don't go overboard on the oil.

1000s of MAF vehicles have them with no issue.
