Well, I figured I'd start my first thread here on AF. I recently joined, but I'm not new to the hobby. I've been watching this forum for a long time, and finally decided to join up.

This is AMT's 49 Ford kit. I've chopped it, and shaved the door handels, trunk hinges, etc. Headlights are frenched. I haven't decided on engine, suspension or wheels yet. Let me know what you guys think.

Very cool. I've got that car in my closet awaiting a similar cut and a sinister paint job. I'm looking forward to seeing this thing get put together!

Thanx guys!!

Mark, I was kinda of thinking of a pearl tangarine or orange. I haven't completely decided yet though. It'll be a while before I get any paint on this. I've got another project I'm focusing on right now. Unfortunately I don't have a digicam, so I can't get any pics of that project. Hopefully I'll find another job soon so I can get myself a digicam.

Thanks guys. Anyone got any ideas for the grill? I've already used the parts that don't allow the stock grill. But I've had a hard time figureing out what to do. This is the part that's really holding this project up.

The grill on the 49 is really cool, you have to use it or modify it a little.. How custom did you want to go with this ride? What changes are holding you back from using the stock grill?

Well, I wanted to give it a more modern rod, clean look. The kit comes with two hoods, one alows for the large bullit surrounded by a circle at the center of the grill. The other is for the custom version, so it's just straight across. I also used the custom grill shell/roll pan. BUT, the custom grills that come with this kit aren't the look I'm going for. They have more of a 60s 70s custom look to them. I've been trying to figure out what to do to fill the space. I thought about just putting a chrome bar across the grill, but I wasn't sure if that would be ebough to fill that large opening. I would also have to figure something out for the turn signals, since they're housed in the grill on the stock grill. Or should I modify the stock grill and sink it in a little to help give it a cleaner look?

Maybe I should use the stock grill, kinda like this?

Man thats going to look good. I have a bag of chrome goodies, I think that one needs a big old toothy grill bar in the middle

hey mate, Looks like you have a few people seaching for ideas for you on this one.. nice work!

I think i know what you mean about the second kit option with the grille. I think you should try and keep the bullet as much as possible. It looks sweet and really makes the '49.

I saw a pic of a '49 with a painted bumper (same style as your last pick) but it still had the bullet and horizontal bar in the front with minimal chrome.

is this close?

this was the best picture i could find of the front..

good luck anyway, and remember its a '49 Kustom... it can be what ever you want, there are no rules or right or wrongs in the world of kustom kulture!

As soon as I saw that I thought, Hey!! I have one of those from my AMT 57 Chev. So I dug through my parts box and found it, not quite the look I'm goin for though.

Dean23, I love that grill, but it's not really the look I'm goin for either.

Miller, I like the look of that one. I think I'll go for that look. Thanks for all your help guys!! Now I want to get workin on this one again!
