How Do I Retrieve Transmission Codes

I have a 4l80e transmission and it won't shift out of second. I heard that it could be a shift solenoid or ignition switch so i want to check for codes. I used a scan tool on the typical connector but it didn't find any codes. Is there a different connector for transmission codes? If you could please instruct me on how to check codes as if I was stupid so I can be sure i did it right. Thanks, all help and info os appreciated.

There is only one connector to read codes. Some scan tools only read generic codes and will not include "enhanced" codes (such as ones that the transmission will set).

Which scan tool did you use? Perhaps you can contact the scan tool company to see if they support trouble codes for your 4L80E.

I tried to retreive the codes using an Actron OBD2 decoder (cost around 150.00). Nothing came up. I did test for power to the solenoid so i think since it has power it must be the solenoid or something worse. It will not shift out of second no matter where the shifter is. The tranny was just rebuilt and this is first time trying to drive it since i put it in. If anyone has instructions, please post or explain it.

Thanks

I have read that if you install the valve body bolts wrong, it can stick in 2nd gear.

There are also 2 shift solenoids, did you check that both are working?
