Hey, I am looking at buying a 1991 Mustang... It says it's a cobra, it has the cobra emblems on the side, the 5.0 engine 5-speed t-5 transmission... but the 5.0l HO intake manifold... I'm not really sure what to think of it... He has a carfax... it shows the car is basically clean... it was involved in a minor collision, all that needed to be replaced was a fender... I found out that the mustang "cobra" was sold in Canada from 1987(I think)-1992... so there's a possibility that it's legit... anybody else have any thoughts a/b this?

Get the VIN and call 1800 Ford-SVT they would be able to tell you if it is a real Cobra or not. SVT will be gone in a few days so I don't know if the number will work or not.

Yeah, I e-mailed the guy a/b the VIN (I checked out the car, but didn't take down specific info)... it's pre-SVT though, isn't it??? I'm sorry, I'm not really up to date on all my Ford info...

oops yea I didn't look at what year you said it was. 1993 was the first year of the SVT Cobra. So it sounds like its a Fobra. There are many fake Cobras out there.

Actually... Cobras have been around a long while... back in the 60's-70's there were Mustang Cobras... and the Shelby Cobra... and there were Mustang Cobras built in 1987-93 made in Canada... I'll try and find the site I found last night...

I know there was a Mustang GT350 in the mid 80's that had a limited production run but no Cobras for the fox body that I know of till 93.

I'll look for that site... it has the canadian models... which weren't really different... but they were fox-bodied "cobras"

Ok just found some info on then and it was just a marketing ploy for the Canada market. They are nothing more than a U.S. Mustang GT.

lol, it's funny that we both came back with the same site... yeah, I was just given the vin... it matches up and everything looks ok... the rear bumper I believe, says "cobra"... but maybe I remembered wrong... but there are cobra emblems down the side...
The VIN came back as a 1991 Mustang GT/Cobra... they were, in fact, the same thing... this was actually a US made mustang, with the emblems added later...
Thanks,
-Mikelb

The Canadian GT/Cobra was just as you described, a stock GT with a sticker package to boost sales (kinda like most "California Special" cars).

I hope you DO NOT buy this car!! Yes, Ford made the Mustang Cobras in the late 60's, and King Cobras in the mid-late 70's. They DID NOT use the name and badging again until 1993! I looked at the pics. of this car and it DOES NOT have the Cobra intake, and DOES NOT have the Cobra insert in the front of the grill. Anybody who is anybody knows to make a good fake snake that they can easily add the grill and intake!! If there is ANY doubt when spending your money, why would you go ahead with it? I'm not trying to come off like an ass but, just trying to help. STAY AWAY! GOOD LUCK!

Actually, they did sell Cobras in the ealry 90's (pre 1993), like the other members said... I found out that they were nothing other than specially badged GT's... the car is legit... I've seen the VINs and Carfax, and all that other stuff... it is even listed on the title and carfax as a Mustang Cobra/GT... but the making of it is all the same...
Thanks for the help you guys,

1979-1981 Cobras were made in the Fox body. 1982 was the first year of the GT.
