Im trying to buy supplies to polish my valve cover(big metal block), but I had a problem. I went out today to get the supplies and the instructions that I'm using say to get; 600dry, 1000,1500,2000wet/dry, sandpaper. I went to home depot and lowes and the highest thing they had was 400 grit. Are my instructions wrong, where should I get the sandpaper. The instructions are on JDMfan.com, here (http://www.jdmfan.com/technical/cosmetic/polish_valvecover/) I have this posted elsewhere but please post wherever, Thank you.

thats because those are hardware stores go to an automotive store to get the right stuff. or go to wal-mart they sell the sandpaper needed.

OK, so the guy who wrote the web site didnt reply so I went along with some advice I got. I used 600 grit wet/dry then fine steelwool followed by polish. It wasnt a mirror finish, but Im content. Thanks to all that tried to help.

yeah, guy in a GMC Yukon cut in front of me, taking my 2-3 car stopping distance to 1-1.5 car lengths, he stopped once, i slammed on the breaks and skidded a couple feet, he started to go again, so i started to mvoe into the right lane, and he hit his breaks again and came to a complete stop. ass-ended him...nothing wrong with his car, front of mine....well... you'll see from the pictures.

still dont know what im gonna do with it, if fixing it is going to cost as much as i think it will, im prolly gonna look into an older RX7 or something.

So that means he needs super fine sand paper, like he said 2000 grit. You start off with rough sand paper and then get finer and finer until it's eventually polished. You need to use the fine sand paper to get out the scratches and gashes that the rough sand paper causes. I've done this a few times, it definately matters what you use. :)
