Headlight connection melting!!

My cousin has a 99 Firebird 3.8 and my Uncle said for whatever reason that they had to use duct tape to hold the connection when they replaced the headlight. He said after about 10 seconds it started to smoke around the tape and melted the pigtail connector. He checked at Pontiac and they don't make that part and he checked at part stores and got the same response. So he said he was going to cut the plastic pigtail out and kind of hardwire it in. So basically there is no connector just a piece of wire going to the headlight. Is this going to work? Why did it melt in the first place? Was it just because the tape got hot? I have not seen it yet so I can't give you anymore info. on it but that. Do you think he'll have the same problem again? THE WIRE IS GOING INTO THE BACK OF THE HEADLIGHT, HE SAID IT'S NOT FOR THE LIGHTCOVERS. Thank You.

never had a problem with headlights, but im on my third pair of fog lights on my 94 TA due to the same problem. my first two pair completely melted the plastic holder that the bulb screws into, much like your problem. i have talked to couple of people at car shows and they have had same problem with their foglights, but ive never heard of the headlights doing this. ive had people tell me anything from a short, bad bulb, wrong watt size of bulb and everything. still haven't figured it out, but this pair has lasted me about 2 years now with no problems. i know this wasn't much help but maybe someone else might have solved this problem and will post.

if you have some exon blue bulbs in it, it may be drawing to manny watts from the stock wire and causing it to heat up and melt.

NO, he has stock lights. We don't want it looking like an import! Thank you though.

just because you have brighter clearer bulbs don't mean you are a ricer, they help you, shine farther, and look good.
