Classic Chrysler

I haven't posted for awhile but thought I would jump back in with another one of my colored pencil works. This was done from some reference pics I took at a classic car show several years back. It is done on white Stonehenge paper with Prismacolor pencils. The total time from start to finish is somewhere around 45-50 hours. The picture size is 14-1/2x18.

omg you are reallly really good. i love the details in the tire wall and on the spokes. also the grass is just as amazing. unbeleivable worksmanship. nice:grinyes:

i got some prisma colors but after i finish my drawing doesnt look anything like that ......wats up with that?

Hi JD, I've got 47 years of drawing cars and about 5 years of colored pencil work. Just keep working at it. If you really like colored pencils, pick up a book and see how other people do it. I had been working with regular pencils, watercolor and acrylics before I ever started with cp's so I got a book and followed the instructions. When you see how it's done you will develop your own style. By the way, it doesn't hurt to have a knowledge of perspective and constructing elipses also. If you'd like to see some of my other work you can go to this link. I build miniature engines and plastic models also. Just look around and see what's there.

:shock: wow! Damn, that's detailed. All that experience really has paid off... you're one of my fav colored pencil car artists :). Is there any secret to drawing grass like that, or is it as hard as it looks?

Thanks Alex. Here's how I do grass. I first see what the general color of the grass is, warm (yellow greens) or cold (blue greens) and I lay down a light wash of Limepeel if it's in the yellow green range. In the background you don't have to be as picky because it's in the distance so you wouldn't see that much detail. As I work forward I use small mainly vertical strokes but the closer I get to the foreground I start tilting the strokes randomly (just like the natural grass would grow). I work with progressively darker colors. Sticking with warm grass I would use Marine Green or a little bit of Olive Green. Where the shadows are I use Dark Green and to give it some real depth I use a complimentary color like Tuscan Red first and then go over it with Dark Green. Once everything is layed in I go back and give the large areas some color changes just to break up the large areas and give it more interest. It's not really as hard as it seems. Once you've done a couple of them it goes quite a bit quicker.
