SES light

I was driving on the freeway the other day and my SES light came on. Nothing happened to the performance or anything to the car. There are no smells and it drives the same. Does anyone know what this could be?

What year, model and engine size?
If the SES light is still on get it scanned for odb-ii DTC error codes.
Places like Autozone wil do it for free.
