run on starter on maxx

Have a 2005 maxx that sometimes when you start it the starter doesn't disengage when you let go of the key. It will continue to keep cranking for a couple of seconds. Service manager says alot of the new cars do this. When the engine turns faster then the starter it disengages. Doesn't do it all the time. Just wanted to know if others have this happen or if the manager was filling me full of crap.

the starter should disengage as soon as you let the key go, the engine turning faster will not make the starter disengage, only the drive spin on the ringgear really fast.
It sounds like the starter drive is hanging up when pulled in by the solenoid,
the drive is probably loose or the shaft is worn or burred it slides on.

try new starter or have your's checked by a starter rebuild shop.

Wrong. The Maxx, as well as many other newer vehicles, has a type of starter that engages the second you turn the key and then won't disengage until it actually starts (or a certain time limit expires). Once you turn the key for a second, you can immediately release it and the starter will continue to crank.

There's a glitch in late model Malibus and Maxxes with the 3500 V-6; every so often I (and many others) will encounter a "hard start" where the car takes 5-10 seconds to start. I also encountered this on a recent '06 Impala rental with the all-new (so says GM) 3500 VVT V-6.

Doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence.

first i've heard of this good to know, but sounds like a messed up system to me.

My 2005 MAxx did it too. At 9000 miles I complained to the dealer. They put in a new starter. It still did it. Now I just ignore it. I generally just hit the key for as short as possible and most times it doesn't make the noise.

There was a bulletin for cars that started and the starter stays engaged while started. But they were researching my 2004 Maxx. My starter stays engaed but does not start the vehicle, it will eventually on the 5th try or so.
GM engineer worked on my car for 3 hours and it still does not start.
I always assume service managers are full of crap. Mine point blank lied to me.
