4-WHEELIN in water question

its been a long time since i've been on here but i need some help once again....
for those who dont know its a 95 wrangler rio grande and n e way my problem was that today i went 4-wheelin and it seemed like everytime that i went through a mudhole about a foot deep with water after i pulled out of it my engine would sputter horribly ... kinda like i had water in the motor or exhaust or somethin ... is there anyway i can prevent this cause muddin isnt that fun if you have to stop and rev the motor after every hole ... thankx

just incase anyone needs to know its the 2.5L 4cyl
