How to check engine codes

I'm trying to locate the ECU, to pull thediagnostic codes and having no luck. I pulled the under dash apart on both driver and passenger sides but dont seem to find the box. Is there a different ways to check or is it like gm vehicles where you count the light flashes (i dont know much about imports).
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

.... you count the light flashes ...

Pull off dash mid kick panel, pass side. How to - see page15 below. I guess you have the 3gen max, -89 model?

Dont expect to benefit much from the obd-I -info; what I have found useful has been idle adj and O2 testing. It does not give info for misfire etc...

yea its on the pass side on the floor...closer to the driver side...kinda under the radio...behind the plastic...theres like a screw hole..use a flat head and turn it...and count the flashes..
