Automatic or Manual?

Hi there,

This is my 1st post and I have been very interested in the new Z that is coming out. I'm sure to purchase a new vechicle for college. I like driving automatics over manual. I am wondering how much slower the automatic would be compared to a manual or would they have even numbers because of the shift mode that comes with the automatic?

I dont know the differences in the times for auto/manual on the new Z, but my first 280zx turbo was an automatic... the one I have now is a stick... this one is a lot faster...

Besides... a Z just isn't a Z without a manual trans...

it makes me sad that anyone would even consider buying an automatic sports car, especially a Z. If you dont know how to drive a manual, just learn if you buy a sports car, it is definately worth it.

The majority of sale for just about any car will be with an automatic. Sucks, stupid, ya whatever, but its true. No damn way I will buy an automatic Z, but check the classified ads or do a search on the web via Autotrader or whatever you wish. Most of the cars (even Z's) that you find will be automatics.:(

Of course this may be due to the fact that most "stick" drivers get a bit out of hand and end up trashing their cars.:frog:

I know what you mean, i was looking around at used Supras, and about every one that i found that was a turbo and in my price range was an auto. My theory is that americans are just lazy.

Hey Grendel,

I'd show you the stick in my new Z, but that would mean I'd have to slow my old ass down. :D

I'm waiting impatiently for my new 350Z Touring model with auto tran.
The choice of tranny was a very difficult one. Although I really love to drive, I live in a highly populated area (San Jose, Ca.)
The auto/stick just makes more sense, or maybe the other fellow was right in saying that old guys just want to look good in it, or we are lazy.
Hell, I can live with that, but my favorite kind of driving doesn't require a 6 speed. From what I've read about the torque of this engine, it should pull just fine from the 5 speed auto.
Thats my 2 cents.
Isn't it great to have choices?

the auto wont be much slower in acceleration than a manual now, the only problem is autos will still get muddled up no matter how far the technology, but then again the shifting can be done quicker than in a manual, and nowadays the revs are matched perfectly by the box.

Joe,

If I lived in a metropolitan area I might have chosen the automatic. Luckily, I don't and I work nights and am always going against the traffic. :D

When did you place your order and have you gotten your order # yet?

I ordered mine 05/02/02 and am still waiting for my order #.

Glenn,
Good to hear from you. I haven't gotten an order number yet. I placed my order sometime in early Feb., like yourself.
I tell ya, I get beat up by everyone for not getting the 6 speed, and I almost changed my mind. I have to keep asking myself, what kind of driving I'll be doing 90% of the time. I want to go fast, but I'm not about to go around racing other people 0-60.
No offense to anyone, but the boy-racer in me grew up.
Again, no offense. Anyone with the sense to jump on this car, no matter what the equipment, can't be all bad.

Hehe, I didn't mean any insult by my comment (tho I read it now and see how it could be taken as an insult)

I'm sure even the auto 350z will tear the shit outta my 5spd 280zxt :)

I like to drive fast, as well, but don't feel the need to race. After all there are only a handful of cars that could beat the Z. Nothing to prove, nothing to gain, why bother?

I haven't read through this whole thread yet but I don't have to, to say this one thing. Do NOT get a auto, you will regret it, maybe not right away but you will. That's what I'm going through right now with my car, I'm planning on trading it in because I was a moron and got an auto. You don't have as many gears (even though the Z auto has 5) you don't put as much HP to the ground (aditional 10% or so loss) and it's just pathetic to have a sports car with an auto.
