fuel gauge problems on FFV 1998 Taurus

Having intermittent problems with fuel gauge and miles to
empty display. They will sometimes work fine then next time gauge reads way full and no display on miles to empty display. Have inspected wiring and connention on back of dash assembly and looked ok. When they come on
they appear to be accurate. Does anyone have a idea where look next?

I'm no expert but seems to me your mte meter probably gets a reading from your fuel gauge sender, if it's wacked, would certainly throw off all calculations,, My Taurus cars with low fuel lights, 94 and 99, both come on with plenty of fuel left in tank, more then the manual says should trigger the lights, 99 fuel gauge at least necessarily doesn't read that accurate, not way out there either.. probably your sending unit may be acting up, not sure if it's integral to the fuel pump, if it is, I know the fuel pumps for flex fuels are really expensive compared to regular gas pumps.. I think because of the methanol compatible parts, I live with mine, not all that bad.. I think, at least on the 99, that if the fuel guage is somehow part and parcel with the coolant guage, you replace them both,, 98 may be the same.

you might also have a short somewhere, that would explain the gauge reading extremely full with no miles left display. Try checking all of the wires with a mulitmeder if you have one handy.

The DTE module is part of the instrument cluster in your FFV Taurus. There have been others with non-FFV Taurii who have experiences problems with the flex board on the instrument cluster. You may want to look into a similar issue on your instrument cluster (although I see you've already looked at the connection). Or, you may have a faulty DTE module.

If you are comfortable around electronics and a soldering iron, it may be worth the effort to reflow the solder joints in the DTE module if you don't find anything obviously bad with the flex board.

Your car has a Flex Fuel sensor module that is connected to the fuel sending unit. The fuel guage and DTE module appear to get their information from that sensor module. I suppose that module could be faulty too.

i found my problem. It was a sensor module located behind the radio
replaced it with a new one and things are working fine.
Cost was $40.00 not bad at all
