Son ran 2k ranger w/ 3.0l out of gas. The truck has 110k miles on it. Can get it to run by spraying carb claener in plenum while cranking. Replaced fuel filter but I can't find the fuel pump and or the relay to see if it is working. There is no fuel going to the rail did get a little air out when the schrader valve was depressed but no fuel.

Fuel pump is in tank. Go to wwwlfleet.ford.com and click on maintenance tab, then click on owners manual, enter info, go to roadside emergencies and look for the fuses and relays. It will show you where all the fuses and relays are located.

Make sure you check the inertia switch as well. Being that you said you ran it out of gas, you might have burned the pump up.

I don't know why the auto designers don't just install a switch to shut down the engine when the fuel gets to an unsafe level ... or, at least, have a warning label stating the damage that may occur.
For most folks, running out of gas seems an innocent enough problem ... just refill as required!
But as the fuel level gets low, several factors are possibly involved:
. The pump fuel is designed to be submerged in fuel.
. The pump is designed to pump fuel, not air.
. If there has been trash swirling, rather harmlessly, around in the tank ... it now gets pulled into the inlet screen, and possibly the pump itself.
