2000 CRV towing

:banghead: Does anyone have any information about towing w/ my CRV. I'd like to tow a motorcycle. Does anyone have any recomendations on what i should do? any and all information will be helpful, thanks.

I have a 99 and I tow a teardrop trailer that weights 800 lbs. The factory rates it at 1000 lbs towing capacity. My Aunt towed a Scamp travel trailer accross country with here 2000 crv with a manual transmission. Mine is also a manual. I think they are better than autos for towing.

The maximum safe towing limit, as indicated by the owners manual, is 1000 pounds. This is partly due to the fact that the chassis is a hybrid and not a box chassis like the heavy duty trucks. The chassis is too weak to handle forces in excess of 1000 pounds safely. Now, it can be done and has been done, but let's say you are pulling a pop-up camper (roughly a ton) at highway speeds and you need to slow down fast. The hitch would most likely bend or even tear the mount and/or chassis. I like to think of it like the Subaru Outback. The 01 Outback's manual says 1000 pounds is the safe limit for a trailer without brakes, but if the trailer has brakes then 2000 pounds can be achieved. And I bet the same would be true for any second generation CR-V. The other reason 1000 pounds is the recommended maximum is because the CR-V simply wasn't designed to haul large loads (i.e. it is not low and wide and does not provide enough torque) which can affect the handling characteristics at certain speeds.

As far as just towing a motorcycle and trailer, I see no problem. The trailer weighs around 800lbs, yes? And the motorcycle around 250? If so, then there definitely would be no problem for the CR-V
