Hey guys, I just bought a 96 ford contour @ police auction. When I first tried to start it, all it did was click... so I tried jumping it - didn’t work. Had the battery checked - was good.
So I replaced that damn starter :banghead:
Now it starts. But then it stalls. :banghead:
It kind of makes a high pitched noise when it turns over and it dies instantly.
IF I hold down the gas petal when I start it, it stays on for only as long as I hold the gas petal down. then it dies. When I do this, it like revs up and down while I’m holding the gas petal at a constant rate. The throttle plate moves erratically...
PLEASE HELP! :frown:

Your car is equipped with a device that governs your rpm's. If you hold the rpm's too high the device interupts it and causes the motor to rev intermitently. Try less rpm's.
As for the car stalling and hard starting; I had the same problem. Its origin was a locked up A/C pulley. I simply bought a belt that bypassed the A/C pulley and now it runs fine, but I have no A/C.
To see if you have the same problem remove the belts and see if all of your pulley's rotate freely.
PS: Especially check the "Idler" puller that holds tension on the belt if you have a serpentine belt.
Good Luck!!!!!

sounds like a timing issue.
you hitting ther 4k rpm limiter thats why your throttle plate is doing this.
If his a/c was locked up his car wouldn't start at all.

even when I barley press the gas petal at all it does it.... vroooomm. vrooomm. vrooom. all on its own. The further down I press the petal, the more frequent and louder the revving happens...

interesting.
is this a Zetec (2.0L 4 Cylinder) or a Duratec (2.5L V6)?

I had a similar problem as yours. My friend kinda fixed it for me which is the wierd thing. He just held the throttle in just barely to produce a Manual idle. I was inspecting the engine for air leaks or anything different. After about 7 -10 minutes I told him to let off the gas and it idled on its own. Kinda wierd I know but I never had the issue again. I'm not sure if it would work in your case since it appears to be reving up spontaneously, but it might be something to try.
Good luck.
Good luck.

CLEANED IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE
REPLACED FUEL FILTER
CLEANED THROTTLE BODY
AND CLEANED MAF SENSOR.
PROBLEM IMPROVED
Now when I run it, @ low RPM it does not rev itself. At high RPM it still revs itself, but not as bad. Still dies when I let off the gas. Still makes high pitched squeel when I start it.
Thoughts?????? http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif
