Head is Knocking

I am having a wierd knocking/pinging sound coming from what I can tell is the pulley side of the head. I havn't pulled the valve cover yet, but I have good oil pressure I know. Does anyone have some ideas on what it could be? It sounds the worst at about 2000 RPM. I don't hear it at idle or past about 3000 RPM. Thanks for the help. Plus I need to drive it 220 miles home on sunday, so fast responses would be appreciated.;)

Is it RPM dependent. Unplug each spark plug wire one at a time and see if the sound changes. If it does, then it's most likely rod knock, if not, might just be lifter tick

its deffinatley RPM dependent, I was thinking possibly my Balance Shaft belt broke. But I dont know much about them. It is a really loud knock when it happens. I will look into more in the morning. Any other ideas?

I do not believe its a balance shaft belt. Why i say this is because when mine broke i left it alone for 3 months and did not hurt anything. If it dependent with rpms it might be a rod. Does it sound like a low ping knock or a high ping? High ping is most likely head and low is the bottom end :(

Unplug each spark plug wire one at a time and see if the sound changes. If it does, then it's most likely rod knock in that cylinder, if not, might just be lifter tick

Did you do this yet? Simple, easy, and accurate. Just don't shock yourself.

I've heard of warped exhaust manifolds making funny knocking noises too.

I tried pulling spark plugs but I didn't hear any difference in tone. I didn't take the motor up in rpms either though. Maybe I will try that.

EDIT----->Well I tried it at about 2000 rpm and it sounded like the knock went away. So it sounds like I need a new motor. Does anyone know any other test to check for rod knock?

I meant to take the spark plug wire out, but I guess it would have the same effect. If you didn't hear any difference in sound, then you don't have rod knock

I knew what you meant, and that is all I did. I was just typing to fast and I didn't edit my post before I submitted it. Its deffinately a Rod. So now begins the hunt for another engine.:(

I thought you said it didn't change when you pulled the wires, if it doesn't change on any cylinder than it's not rod knock.

If you had read the edit in that post where I tried it at about 2000 RPM you would have seen were I said there was a change in tone.;)

I wish I could build a motor right now, but I cant afford it with college. I am just going get a JDM motor (hopefully with low miles) from a japan importer for as cheap as I can and swap it in. Then I will build a motor in another couple of years.
