I have an 87 trans am 305, I swaped out the computer controlled carb and dist. for an edelbrock 1405 and hei dist. I want to get rid of all the wiring in the engine bay that I dont need, is the fuel pump tied into the computer? how can I rewire it so I can pull the computer and extra wiring out? I know what some of the wires are for but theres alot af wires in there, what are they all for?
has anyone here done this before and know what wires can be cut out?

Wow. That is going to be a can of worms if your not careful. I had that same car with 305 computer controlled carb. and it was a nightmare. The computer controls a lot of different things on that year. There should be wiring there for the MAF, TPS, old ignition which was linked to the distributor for timing advance and such, O2 sensor wiring, AIR and smog pump crap and the EGR. You can probably dump the EGR wiring, AIR wiring and assempbly if you got rid of all that crap, as well as most of the old distributor/carb. wiring. But, the fuel pump wiring should be linked to the computer only for a signal on whether it should be running or not. Basically, if it was VATS equipped, the computer would cut off fuel if the wrong key was in the ignition (if it thought the car was being stolen). It also was told to engage the pumps once you started cranking the car over. This is all for fuel injection though. If you have a standard carb. from Holly or Edelbrock, why dont you just eliminate the in tank fuel pump and computer crap and run a mechanical pump off the side of the engine. It will take some rerouting of lines and crap, but it could be done. If thats too big of a pain though, I would just elave all the fuel pump wiring alone. Only dump the old carb. wiring which you should know right off because its all the wiring thats not hooked up to anything anymore.

ive already cut the wires from the carb, AIR, tc lockup (rewired with tci lockup kit) , knock sensor. are any of the gauges controlled by the computer?
can I just leave the electric pump in the tank unhooked, will a mech pump pull the gas through the electric pump? I would rather just use a mech pump but I dont really wanna drop the tank.

My guess is you would have to pull parts from a tank that was out of a mechanical pump firebird/camaro and it would involve dropping the tank. Thats why as I was typing I said if it was too much of a pain because thats just what it would be...a huge pain.

As far as the gauges, they are fed with seperate wires from sensors for the gauges i believe. There are a seperate set of sensors and wires that feed the computer controls.
