my dad just replaced the water pump, and petrol filter and my car was ok, but it idles pretty high. and when i drive around for a bit and stop the car, it wont start again for some time after that. what would be causing that???

Symptoms are like smbdy opened the hood in an ol car... Nothing wrong done, but ol brittled vac hoses, 'sparkwires' has been [maybe] touched. As no service history is known, some general ideas, go through link below:
- replace brittled vacuum hoses; especially hot engine end (cut off brittled part, half inch?)
- spark; plugs, cap, wires see p12
- groundings, contacts oxidized. See pages 10,15
- relays no contact, maybe Engine cont relay etc See page 5
- check charge voltage over 13.8V, if its bad, see p23
- Fuel pressure check when problem is on. Listen, does the pump start?

if your dad replace your water pump, the timing belt was off and reinstall or hopefully a new one was put back on , in any case your timing can be off. I would check your timing if timng can not be adjusted to spec it's posable the belt may be off a tooth .. i would start there first

the statement is off. Belt & pump not connected, no mention of belt change.

Your timing had to be removed inorder to replace the wp. Your timing is off. Check your timing belt and verify timing. I had the same problem on my max.

Ppl may remove belt, but really NO NEED to remove - but the timing belt cover, crank pulley &belts, possibly Tstat cover.

However, wrongly positioned timing belt always causes problems. Hi idle is definitely smtg else.

We are having a similar problem. When we drive the car around for awhile, turn it off (could be off for an hour or more) when we go to start it again it won't start for several hours (like overnight) If left overnight, you can get in, turn the key on and it starts right up.

What is wrong? Can anyone tell me? Ours is actually a 91 Maxima but sounds like the same thing.

Timing belt issue has absolutely nothin to do with problem depicted in the beginning of this thread. As said, pump replacer may or may not take belt out. If wrongly replaced, the problem stays constantly the same.

As no service history is known, some general ideas, go through link below:

You will need to determine if you have spark & fuel. Check spark is EZ w/ a cheap spack tester. If no spark check for voltage at the 3 pronged connector for the coil trigger unit near the coil (single cam). You should have 12V, ground through coil & trigger voltage .5-1.5 volts. No ground, check coil no 12v check wiring/fuse, no trigger voltage, check #1 pin connection on ECU. Spark but no fuel check wiring & fuel pump relay. Good luck, Bob
