Ignition problems -- 94 Cavalier

Whats up guys, Im new here but I need some help. I mainly found this site and signed up because of that.

We have a 94 Cavalier that has been sitting for several months and we decided it was time to get it running again and back on the road soon. The battery went dead a little while ago so we hooked it up on a charger and let it charge then also jumped it too.

It would try to fire but we could get maybee 1 or 2 revs of the engine and it would die. We couldnt figure out why but then later on this afternoon I decided to go try again, just for the heck of it and I realized our problem.

When the key is turned forward to start it up it works just fine and the car starts but when the key is turned loose it flips back into the OFF position, shutting the car off. Once I realized this I proceded to start the car, let the key move back into the RUN position and hold it there with one hand and the car ran just fine. In fact I was surprised at how well it actually was running. But as soon as i let the key go it would flip to the OFF position again and shut the car off.

Does anybody know whats up with this? What would cause it? What would fix it? Does the igniton just need to be replace or what? Im pretty well an amature as far as mechanics go but any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

i would guess its just caused by time, and yes, youll need to replace the ignition, since its a 94 i bet you'd be able to find one pretty easily at a junkyard for pretty cheap

Thanks for the responce

Somethin kind of strange happened this morning however......

Yesterday was very warm (60-70s) and this morning is cold out, probobly in the 50s or so. I decided to go mess with the car a little more just to see and at least let it run for a little while even if I had to hold the key.

I got in, turned the key and it went to the on position where it should be and stayed there. I was like no way... but sure enough, I fired it up and let go of the key and it went back to the RUN position where it should be. I drove her around for a little while and all seems fine for now. :shakehead
