So I just broke the father-in-laws 1/2" drive torque wrench:eek:. He's had it since 1961 so he needed a new one anyway:grinno:
Well now I know what to get him for Fathers' Day. Who makes a good one for less than $200.

I got my Craftsman Torque Wrench for $65 on sale, and it's the kind that clicks. That broken torque wrench will be good as a breaker bar.

How do you break a torque wrench? I mean, i can understand smacking it around and messing up calibration, or setting it too high or low from the limits, but breaking it? You must have had some Chuck Norris sized torque on that thing. Unless the gears just stripped out

For general car wrenching, spenind over $80 is too much. The above brands mentioned are all good tool companies. You don't need the precision of 1/1000 of a ft. lb. for a car [which is what the $200-700 wrenches offer, in that they are super precise].
But that is for super close tolerance machinery, and no car yet needs that precise torque, lol.

I agree with the first two, but stanley doesn't do it for me. Anything you can buy at wal-mart or k-mart doesn't fly in my book :)

Sears has lifetime warranty too. They'll always ask you if you put a pipe on it though, you know what to say.

Snap-on torque wrenches are junk............. heck, most crap-on tools are junk........... worst thing the air force ever did was give the tool contract to snap-on............. just my :2cents:

I like my snap on torque wrench. It was my dad's before me and it still works great. he bought it in the late 70's or early 80's. As far as craftsman asking questions... that BS they just say ok here's the new one. no questions asked. Thats one of the reasons I buy craftsman because you can actually damage thier stuff and bring it back. For instance I had something I had to grind off a 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the wrench head to fit into the engine space. Afterwards I just returned it for a new wrench... no questions asked. Sears is freakin awesome like that, and husky in home depot is the same. they are actually made by craftsman so you get the same return deal.

The older snap on tools are great, my dad has some way old snap on that still work as good as new, but the new stuff............ they have some major reliability issues..................
oh btw....... torque wrenches do need to be calibrated every once in a while...........

Been using Snap-On for 6 years or so, and I have never had a major problem with any of their tools. I agree, they are overpriced, but so is matco and cornwell. Now cornwell stuff is junk. I wont touch cornwell, unless I know it is something that has been rebaged, that is quality.

I was waiting for someone to ask that....
Well I, I was pulling an axel and had to remove the hub nut which was put on with a 1/2" impact gun. His torque wrench was the only 1/2" drive thing laying around, I forgot my breaker at home, I know, I know. The whole time I using his torque wrench I telling myself, "Dont break this, you should not be using this to remove hub nuts" But I could not help myself, It was cold and it was getting dark. I had to act. I guess we could call his wrench Snap-off...:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::r ofl::rofl:
BTW it wasn't a Snap-on

Yes, they do, Sears merged with K-Mart, and is selling Sears brands in K-Mart now. Full warranty from Sears, but you may have to go over some K-Mart
service desk clerk who doesn't know diddly first.

Interestingly, I have some Benchtop brand that was K-Mart product, they doing me fine, but I [thankfully] don't need to use them that much.
