Brake question

My 98 Ford Contour recently started this grinding noise when I brake at low speeds. It doesn't do it for high velocities but just as i'm about to stop it will produce a grinding sound for about 5 seconds while holding down the brake pedal.
Is this a sign that I need to change the brake pads or something else?
Thanks for your time and consideration.

yes, usually that is a sign of the rivets on the pad touching the rotor. Get em' changed before you mess the rotor up :)

I think you jinked me. I took it down to the shop and turns out the caliper had locked in place on the rotor and wouldn't release. Therefore wearing down the pads and eventually grinding away at the rotor. Turns out that the pads have never been replaced and I had 105000+ miles on it. The shop told me several other things that was wrong with my car too.
Total Damage $741.00 OUCH!!!

lol, sorry..:banghead:
You should have replaced it all yourself, and saved about 500 dollars.
