Best way to lubricate a Speedometer Cable?

I apologise for asking this on this particular forum, but this one is my favorite forum.

My wife has a '93 Geo Tracker that she loves! She loves that car more than she loves me!

I guess because it lasts for more than 3 minutes...

Anyway, when you start up and for maybe 5 minutes, there is a loud clicking under the dash
which sounds to me like the speedometer cable. I've heard this sound before.

The click rate depends ONLY on the vehicle speed and not engine rpms....
I assume the Tachometer is electronic.

Does any company sell a grease gun attachment that screws onto the speedo-cable and
allows one to squeeze grease down thru the cable?

I hate the idea of disconnecting both ends and fishing the inside rod out and "Trying" to
distribute grease along it and then get it back inside the cable guard along with the grease!

If nobody sells such an attachment, can anyone suggest HOW TO MAKE ONE?
One could put a 'zerk fitting' on the other end....
Please don't tell me to look in J.C.Whitney.....arrrggg!

if you disconnect it from the tranny you can pull cable out, lube it with graphite and put it back in, never seen a greaser but guess someone might make one

I don't drive this Tracker much and I was telling my wife about the Speedometer Cable.

She informs me that if she lets the car warm up until hot, the sound (which I thought was
from the speedo-cable) doesn't happen!

If THAT is so, then what the Heck could be clicking as the car rolls along (click rate varies
with vehicle speed in neutral coasting)...that would go away when the engine is hot?

This one has me stumped...

The only way to listen in the engine compartment is if I put it up on Jack Stands, which
I hesitate to do - dangerous!

Speedo cables are only like $20 at the dealer. If it's making noise, it's probably worn into it's casing already. It's best to just replace it. Should be a 20-30 minute job at the most.
