For single, I like the big open tip, but if it's dual exhaust I could go ether way depending on the car...

I dont own this car, but ive seen a few. I like the dual single like Apex N1. It looks killer. I also saw a 300zx with dual Apex N1 and it looked great.

Dual with single tips. As an example...

I've never heard a 3kgt with an aftermarket exhaust. Does it sound like a ricer? I've thought of buying a borla cat back but I'm still debating.

Oof, you're missing out. I love the sound of my exhaust. It's rumbly, but not harsh. It's a really clean sound.

Ouch, "universal mufflers" are no-no's. I remember a friend who bought one for his jetta, he ended up spending more money on the fabrication to get it to work than an entire exhaust setup would have cost. Just go with a full exhaust kit. They'll run you $500-$1000, and are certainly worth it.

wow really ?
i always thought they were just some pretty basic bolt-ons or welds.... bc we do business(give them lots of good food) with this auto place and they always give me free oil changes and a ton of stuff whenever somethings wrong so i figured they could install it pretty cheap ? i duno 500-1000 is alot to me :( ..... but i guess if its worth it i might have to .. or just leave the stock ones which arnt bad i just wanted somethin new n clean

I've only come across the Borla exhausts, what else is there?

Personally, I love the stock look! If I ever get an exhaust system, I would still want it to look stock even though the piping and everything will change. Not to sure how the tips would affect the rest of the setup as far as performance and sound would go but I would like it to look stock still.

The exhaust does look amazing for a stock setup. especially compared to most cars.

The reason being is that borla is the only maker of an n/a exhaust. If you want a nice sounding exhaust that'll run you a fortune get borla. If you want a nice sounding exhaust that'll be just as good in performance get it done at a custom shop for cheaper. If you want a nice exhaust get one from a stock VR4.

So approx. how much would it cost to have one custom made?

Hmm I don't think Borla is the only N/A exhaust. Mine is "Pilot", or at least thats what it says on the mufflers. Maybe Pilot is a sub-company of Borla?

The stock is nice. Could I just throw in some new mufflers to give it a better sound?

What do you think about these mufflers. I was looking at the exhaust setup. It looks like there is a muffler in the middle of the piping. Could I just throw these on the back or would I have to remove anything else in along the piping?

Edit: Just an idea, I think I might get a flame thrower kit for it too. The only downside would be is that I'd have to remove the cats and when the fuel goes through the cylinders unburned it washes some of the oil off the cylinder walls. I don't want to threaten the life of my car though. Anyone else ever tried this?

They were on the car when I bought it. I don't think you can get the tips anymore, the guy said they were $75 a piece. More pics at www.doecentral.com

I just got my 98 3000GT SL two weeks ago and I went to a muffler place here in town to inquire about a increasing the tone and free up some horses. He was going to use a Magnaflow #12198($174.99) 2 custom pipes at ($42.99ea.), 3 southern hangers($7.99ea.), 2 brackets($$3.25ea), 2 SS tips($55.00ea)for an estimate of $435.97. I went on Ebay and found the muffler for a third of his cost and the other items 1/2 or cheaper. This was going to go from after the cats. I have found me a Race/test pipe for $35 shipped and now looking for a downpipe.

^your exhaust = teh suckage!!!! :icon16:
As far as I know, borla is the only maker of an n/a exhaust... maybe the mufflers are just pilot for yours morphius
and sl3000gt, If I were you, I'd start off with headers and than work my way down.

Well, some of you may not agree, but here's what I'm gonna do for my vr4 when I get back from aghanistan. I'm no mechanic so if anyone sees a problem in performance with this setup, please let me know..
I'm thinkin..... Flowmaster 40 series w/ delta flow single tip (for both sides)
http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/flomstr1a.htm
and...... Ractive Wide Oval Exhaust Tips (silver)
http://www.autobarn.net/raunextip.html
What'cha think?

Custom set ups cost a penny or two, but they only equal the cost of a named aftermarket kit, if you get a kit you still have installation to do.
A good shop will let you bring in the mufflers and charge you for pipe and hangers + labor. You want Mandrel Bent and not Crimped, when it comes to the curves in the pipes as it allows better flow. I would probably purchase some tips, a nice Magnaflow, then pony up the dough to have the work done. Unless you know someone in a auto shop class in high school or college or someone who owns a shop with some mandrel benders (or a blow torch, a jig with a rim and a 5" steel sewer pipe.... old school bending methods...). for proper fitment and little leak it helps to have an expander so you can fit the pieces inside each other.
