fuel pump, or relay?

i cant start my car its a 91 350 camaro, everytime i turn the key in the on position i cant hear my fuel pump whine for like 3 seconds building pressure.
and i dumped some fuel in the intake and it started for like 3 seconds and then died, so it is not getting fuel, so is it the fuel pump relay, or a bad fuel pump?
btw: where is the fuel pump relay at? im guessing its the one by the brake master.
thanks alot

start by replacing the relay, if that does not work, then it is the fuel pump.

so we know your pump is not dead, cause it builds pressure like it should.. you should try something cheap first of all.. get a relay.. like 12 bucks and who knows.. it might solve it.. and yes, it is by the brake booster.. its the relay farthest to the left of the 3..

How about something even cheaper, like inj. fuses and filter.
By the way, the security light wouldn't happen to be staying longer then normal wiould it?

YES the security light does stay on, i forgot to mention that
AFI 05 : i dont think it is building pressure, i said i poured some fuel into the intake manifolds, and it obviously gets into the cylinders and fires up. but when i dont pour fuel in, it doesnt start.. so it is fuel related.
im not sure what the security light means, i hope this solves my problem, thanks alot guys, this is probably one of the helpfullest(word?) forums ive been on.
thanks guys.

im not sure what the security light means, -tim
it means order your copy of 'VATS gone wild' today.
Do you happen to have another key? Otherwise, you could try cleaning up the resisitance chip on yours.

AHH so if you dont hear it whine.. its not starting at all.. i think its either A) your relay, B) the pump itself or 3) the regulator.. could be other things but first things first, before you start replacing stuff... start with relay and fuse.. the fuel pump fuse is by the battery in one of those weatherproof fuse deals..

ooooh if you have a VATS problem.. then none of that replacing stuff will be necessary hopefully.. i dont know anything about bypassing or getting through VATS..

sorry man, ive never worked with camaros before, or american cars at all for that matter, i am not sure of what VATS stands for? plz explain, ill do a quick search too.
AFI 05: im not sure where by the battery you are talking about, everyone keeps telling me its by there, but i cant find it, AH!
ill give it another try, infact i might try looking for a service manual to know where everythings at, that would be a good idea.
keep the advice coming, thanks all.

alright, so i looked into the vats thing vehicle anti theft system, and found that the car wont start without the key with the resistor in the ignition, maybe my resistor is bad? would the fuel pump turn on if it was bad? it still turns the car over multiple times...

uhh dont know about VATS.. but that sensor. yeah its a little hard to find.. its in the passenger side fender well.. just follow the wires around there and youll find it for sure.. cant go wrong its right there.. not hidden or anything.

vats won't allow it to crank at all, and if the security light goes out when you turn the ignition back off then the vats is fine. i'm going outside now to take a photo of the fuse you're looking for.

ok, here's the fuse in its holder located on the passenger side fenderwall.

well, i just checked the fuse, and it is good. thanks alot for the pics btw, ive never seen a fuse hidden like that before, haha.
i am thinking it is the fuel pump now, but i am going to buy a relay for it at hopefully autozone, is there any way of telling which one of the relays is which by the brake booster, because mine are just sitting in there, they aren't attached to the clips like they should be.
ill look at some pictures on the internet and see if i cant find the right one.

When I get home i'll take some pics of the relay.. also you might not want to replace the pump yet because.. man. thats hard, unless you get a mechanic to do it for you

i was talking to a few people about it that have camaros and they said the easier way is to drill out a hole in the top of the gas tank, and then replace the fuel pump, and then get a larger peice of metal to fit over top of the hole, and then either silicone it on, or maybe even screw it on, or pop rivet it, and silicone it...
have you guys ever heard of doing this? if you dont do it this way ive heard it is a real big pita!

Yeah, thats the easier way, but you got to know what you're doing if not you'll cut right into the gas tank since it isnt that far off of where you cut at. And yes if you dont do it that way its a real bitch. :lol2:

so you dont actually cut into the gas tank? i thought that it was an in-tank pump?
anyways, im about to send a link to some pictures that i took, showing the fuel pump fuse and some relays.

this first pic is weird, this is the red wire that goes to the fuel pump fuse, im holding it in my hand in the pic
http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/7509501654.jpg&s=x11
this second pic is showing where the red wire goes to.
http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/7509422042.jpg&s=x11
this third pic is just of how my relays are, they are just chillin in the engine bay.
http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/7509440227.jpg&s=x11
now, about the red wire in the first and second pic... you would think that is it supposed to be a positive or something right? for the fuel pump.. im guessing..
well i took the red wire and pushed it against the positive terminal on my battery and i thought i could hear my fuel rail being pressurized.. i heard a, click pshhhhhhh and then it stopped, so i did it a couple more times, and stuck my head close to the fuel rail and it sounded like pressurized fuel.
hmmm
tell me what you guys think!
thanks guys.

i was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a way you could test your fuel pump, such as finding out where the positive and negative wires go from the fuel pump, so i can hook it staight up to my battery, and see if it turns on, this would tell me for sure if it was the pump.

lol, funny you should say that because that is what i was doing while you were typing it. lol.
anyway, what i did was look behind the relays, and there is a red wire and then there is a black wire.. so i took each relay off, put the car in the ON position, and hooked wire up to a negative terminal on a battery and a positive terminal on a battery, and then i hooked positive to positve and neg to neg, on the relay hookup, and the first one i hooked up was the drivers side fan, then i went to the next one, it was the passenger side fan, then i went to the last one, which has to be the fuel pump, so i hooked it up, nothing happened, i didnt hear anything, so i thought maybe it pressurized already, so i tried to start the car, still the same thing.....
so, my fuel pump is bad.. that sucks.
any of you know where the sending unit is on top of the fuel tank? i think im just going to cut out a hole in the hatch to get to it, thanks alot for all your help.

problem SOLVED!!!
you know that red wire in picture 1 and 2? it wasnt connected to anything, well i hooked it up to the positive as i stated before and then turned the car over and voila! she fired up beautifully, and ran perfect.
oh yea, while i was checking to see where the sending unit was, There was already a hole there!!!!! so that means no dropping the tank next time i need to change the fuel pump.
so simply put it was one wire that was disconnected not letting the car run. im guessing the kid that took the battery out, didnt even realize it was there and he never told me, hey dude you have to hook that to the positive terminal for your car to run.... anyway thanks for all of your help, im sure ill need some this weekend when i go to put in a new tranny, 700r4 yaaay.....
