This happened just outside the town i live in...now all you ppl in other countries like the USA this happens nearly every day, But here in this small country it comes as a huge shock.
Some of you hate police etc etc....but when i read something like this i dont think of him being a cop...i think of him being someones son, someones Dad maybe.
A police officer was confirmed dead tonight after a five-hour standoff ended when police used tear gas to flush a 16-year-old gunman out of a Manawatu rural property.
Another woman police officer was shot in the leg during a confrontation near Rongotea, 19km northwest of Palmerston North just before 1.30pm and was taken to Palmerston North Hospital where she underwent surgery.
The male officer, believed to have been shot in the head and chest, lay outside the house for several hours as police negotiated with the gunman to give himself up and allow them to treat their mortally wounded colleague.
But when all attempts failed they threw in tear gas bombs and sent in dogs to disarm the teenage gunman.
The dead officer was the 26th police or traffic officer to be killed in the line of duty in New Zealand.
The two officers had chased the youth in a car from Palmerston North to a house near Rongotea, police said.
As they tried to arrest him he shot them down outside the front of the house.
The male officer fell to the ground. The woman officer was shot in the upper leg but managed to escape and raise the alarm.
The youth then barricaded himself inside the house which was occupied by a middle-aged couple and their daughter, who were known to him.
Central District Commander Superintendent Mark Lammas said police were not able to go to the aid of the injured officer because the youth kept him "under observation" all afternoon.
"He was extremely volatile and his attention was very much directed at police."
Mr Lammas said the officers had wanted to talk to the youth about an alleged property offence.
When the male officer got out of the car at the property he was shot and lay where he fell.
The female officer fled on foot and was repeatedly fired at, one shot striking her thigh.
Mr Lammas said police had to consider the well-being of the others in the house who had nothing to do with the killing.
"We were fearful their safety was in jeopardy and they had similar fears...
"We were continually speaking with this young man, endeavouring for him to give himself up to us so we could get these people out of the house and of course we desperately wanted to get to our colleague."
Mr Lammas said the layout of the house made it hard to get near.
"It was a terrible dilemma..."
The occupants of the house eventually managed to slip unnoticed out of the property, the girl first and her mother and father later.
Mr Lammas said the youth was known to them but his actions were inexplicable.
"We had no indication at all that this young man was going to do anything like this."
Mr Lammas said the youth came outside after tear gas was thrown into the property and fired a few shots before returning indoors.
Further tear gas was used to force him out and the male police officer was found to be dead.
"Throughout the afternoon we had been fearful our friend and colleague was dead but we were hoping for the best, but that didn't turn out to be the case."
The officer had lain on the ground for five hours.
Mr Lammas said the injured officer was expected to make a full recovery.
"We're just so grateful that she got away. The prognosis for her is very good."
Mr Lammas said support services were with the police officers' families and the family held in the house and police staff from other areas were being flown home.
Counselling would be available for other officers and the people in the house.
Prime Minister Helen Clark said tonight she was deeply shocked to learn of the death of the officer.
Miss Clark offered her condolences to the family, friends and police colleagues of the officer.
"New Zealand police officers put their lives on the line every day in the course of their duty and the whole country will feel this tragedy," Miss Clark said.
The fatal shooting was the second in the area in the past six months.

The basic morals and standards by which we deem ourselves to be a 'civilised society' are gradually being eroded by our own salacious curiosity. We watch the vilest of acts on the television,at the movies, and on our computers without batting an eyelid. We read of the cruelest of acts and the most unneccesary of violence in our daily paper, and in cheap and trashy novels, and believe that the entire world will simply accept it as entertainment.
Sadly there is an increasing portion of the community, who venerate such acts of ruthless selfishness, for whom violence is not only a means to an end,but an incidental gratification to be savoured along the way.It is time to decide what we want and need for entertainment, and reclaim the boundary between harmless escapism and self-fulfilling prophesies of misery.
Call it censorship, grizzle all you like, but the people at the dangerous and impressionable end of the spectrum need to to prevented from accessing the propaganda that they are now enacting on the rest of us.

I blame America.
or rather the America we are totaly bombarded with everyday by the for ever $ hungry media.
And us being a small cultural undevloped nation are for ever hungry to just lap it all up.
What ever happened to kids just being kids, having fun. inocent fun, like breaking your leg riding a bike, or stealing some grog from your parents lique cabniet, or crashing your first car which only cost $500 anyway and was never going to pass its next warrant.
Your first job only paid $5 an hour and you used the money to buy tapes of cool bands that didnt sing about rape murder and violance.
And most of all, the most stressful thing you had to worry about was passing school C, and whether the girl sitting on the otherside of the school fields was looking at you, or the guy behind you.
Now kids go out and commit armed robbery then think they can solve thier problems by running to a girlfriends house and shooting at the police.

You have just excused New Zealand from the responsibility of thinking for itself. That is exactly why we are in this mess.

It's a sick world we live in! Here in California there have been several child abductions, one resulting is death, another yesterday which might be the dead little girl who was just found earlier this evening, and one who is still missing and possible alive in another state. There are so many terrible people out there I feel sorry for little children who have to be on their guard all the time. The poor children can't even be children anymore, they have to grow up so quick!
We have a 3 stikes and you're out law here, but isn't once enough! Just think of all the victims of a perps first crime, much less multipling it by 3! Put them away on the first time for any vicious crime!!!!!!!!!!!

92% of vters in NZ called for tougher sentencing in a referendum 3 years ago....trouble is,every time the government tries to build new prisons, there is a flood of objections from the affected neighbourhood.Instead of building huge barns to house the crims, why not build a small and spartan jail in each town, like the old days?let each town deal out justice according to local community standards, nonee of this politically correct warm fuzzy rehabilitation crap, make it bloody uncomfortable and fewer crims will prefer to be in jail.
Nobody with any common sense is going to object to buildind a place to keep their own streets free of vermin, and the government doesn't need to pay out millions in court hearings /planning consent/consultation etc.
The sooner we change the rules and abolish parole in favour of extended sentences for poor behaviour while incarcerated, the better. It's not supposed to be a resort hotel, these people deserve a bit of a shakedown!

I'd like to start my own Country. There's One Law- Do whats right. If you break the law, the victims get to pick a sentance to be carried out. If there are no victims, the entire country decides (see below)
When you move to this country, you get a basic computer and internet service (used for voting [damn collage] or the abovementioned sentancing) everyone who wants to vote, does vote.
People would be educated to the dangers of drinking, and smoking (not just cigarettes) and if they still choose to, ok. Hospital bills wouldn't be EXHORBANT, (is that proper word use?) and instead of using money for food, each family is given a ration card (which would provide more than enough for the family)
There are plenty of problems with this plan, I know, so don't bother pointing them out to me- The biggest problem being that in order for this society to work, would require RESPONSABILITY AND MATURITY on the part of EVERY citizen. I've considered buying a small country and anyone who wants to join MY country has to pass a one on one interview with me.
Ricers need not apply
Posers, see above.
now, Realistically, I know that's a pipe dream.
More simplistically, we go by the law, "do whats' right" and shoot anybody who doesn't obey in the head. That would be nice.
[/pointless worthless rant]

Heres hoping that the 17 year old jerk with the gun(don't get mr t started on gun laws)gets to be some Mongrel Mob members prison bitch every night for the rest of his natural life, and gets stabbed to death in a prison brawl.

I hope that really does happen to him Mr T !!!
But now look at the latest crap going on with the shooting of that 16 year old. The key witness changes his story for fear of getting the living crap beaten out of him, and the pricks that done it are now free to walk the streets again. What a fuckin waste of police time and money.
They should round the lot of these gangs members up....take them to some huge park and just let the fuckers go at each other....sort of a last man standing thing :p ....and the winner gets.......
Shot by the cops !!!:flash: :flash:

I'm afraid I missed something. Why did the local Police go "Waco TX" on this kid? Was he inside a car in front of the house? Why risk getting shot trying to get him out of the house if he is not killing anyone or raping the couple?
There are just too many details being left out of this post. Someone please refer me to a newspaper article so I may read more about this.

Moppie - Please dont use the tired "Blame America" b.s. We have our problems and our media is always quick to point them out, but thats a pretty weak excuse. Its cause and effect, the media only puts out what people want to see. As soon as enough people stop watching and move on to something else, you'll see the media change with it. I think if people were held responsible for their actions and it wasn't so damn easy to get sympathy by blaming someone else for their problems.
The description of how life used to be (it wasn't easier, just different) can be traced to being because you were responsible for what you did and parents were allowed to discipline their children and self relience was a necsesity.
I hope that little asshole dies a slow excruciating painful death for what he did.
