hi guys..
l wonder what is this valve thing...? l saw 1990 honda civic at my mechanic's store and it was saying 16 valve but l saw LS1 trans ams are 16 valve too..
is this mean ls1 engine is like 1990 honda civic's engine just four more cylindeer? l see cobras have 32 valve.. what this valve doing to the engine?
also l have to tell this, that 1990 honda had 200k miles on it and idling was PPEERRFECCT and l drove it and parked it after repair, and l saind, DAMMNN!! it was so smooth and runs great. l just cant imagine 2006 hondas.. they are so good cars..

they're referring to the exhaust and intake valves, some engines have 2 exhaust or two intake stead of just one of each, the ls1, with 16 valves, has one intake and one exhaust per cylinder, while the honda with the same amount of valves and half the cylinders has two exhaust and two intake valves per cylinder.

Basicly making it a dual overhead cam (DOHC) motor. Two cams.
Just two different designs.
The LS1 has a single cam with overhead valves. (OHV)
Many will argue as to which one is better till they are blue.
I say go with what you know.

wow, think if the ls1 was a dohc motor. lol

It would be a totally different animal then...

Probably wouldn't change the power output.

how? if it was DOHC and it had 32 valve that would mean more air in the motor right? Equals more power.
Mr. Luos

And also a much larger motor. Much more to spin. Two cams and double the valves the motor has to spin to make power.
They both have their advantages...but I can't say either is better than the other. All opinion based.
Ford uses the DOHC motors (lower cubes) with boost to make high power.
GM uses pushrod (OHV) motors with large cubes to make power.
Both work.

ya i see your point, but the ls1 is light to begin with, so if it had DOHC 32 valve then it would weigh like a normal v8. So "I" think it would make more power. But like Mr.luos said, it is all opinion, and i don't want to get in one of these arguments with which one is better, lol
Mr. Luos

You are thinking weight of the entire motor....I am not.
Like I said, they both have their advantages.

Not to mention, those dual intake valves are usually just 2 smaller valves as opposed to one large valve...

ya, who cares because chevy's push rod v8's are still smoking fords DOHC motors, lol

it all depends, like luos said..
i suppose if the ls was a DOHC, it would rev plenty higher and may get more power...but it would also lose a lot on friction.. mm..
OHV, low tech, torquey and well, easier to upgrade IMO =)

Or, not. Remember the LT5? Maybe not, since that was almost 15 years ago. It had DOHC, 345 cubes, and made less HP and torque than the LS1 with a nearly identical bore/stroke. Perhaps lugging the three boxes of chain around and around isn't such a good thing. And lobe friction, and smaller valve and the necessarily smaller ports.
That's probably why you don't see many top feul engines ruinning more than two valves. Then again, they only make 6,000HP.
Buy the Honda. You'll think you're much happier, since they're "so good cars" after all.

I probably will be.
