'94 Lebaron GTC Stalling Problem PLEASE HELP!!

My girlfriend has a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron GTC Convertible. After she bought it, it ran good for a while, but it started a wierd stalling problem. When she came out of a red light and tried to accelerate, it stalled. The "Check Gauges" light came on and she couldn't get it started again. After waiting on the side of the road for about half an hour, it finally started and she'd drive it home. This happened quite a few more times until she got fed up with it and let her dad drive it. He just put it in neutral whenever it stalled and started it and threw it in gear (I don't know how he got it to start, but whatever.)

Anyway, she took it to a mechanic, and they didn't know what was wrong, so they did some things to the engine to try and fix it, and had no success. (I don't know what they did.) Later on, she brought it to the guy (dealer) she bought it from, and he said to put a new distributor in it, so they did. That seemed to help for a while, but just last week it started stalling going up my driveway to leave my house, and just today it started stalling on the road again.

HERE ARE THE SYMPTOMS that I encountered:
I put it in neutral to start in, and it started, so I put it in drive and kept going, only it started slowing down, and I noticed that it had just stalled right away. So I pulled over and tried to start it, both in neutral and in park. It starts perfectly fine, but the RPMs just drop right back down to zero and the engine quits before it even gets a chance to idle, and before I get a chance to put it into gear.

I drove it home by starting it in neutral and stepping on the gas immediately and putting it in drive, and that worked until I had to stop, where it just died again. So I did that all the way home, and rode it down the hills in neutral.

An hour later, after spending some time on this forum to get answers, I decided to go outside and do some research under the hood myself. So I started the car, and it drove up my hill and turned around and back down fine. So the problem is INTERMITTENT.

I listened for the fuel pump during this interval of the car running fine, and it comes on. So any help from anyone here would greatly be appreciated.

A quick response would be appreciated, as she must drive this car an hour to school every day starting next week. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

I had this problem with my 94 before I got my tranny replaced, dunno if it has any connection. The only thing I could do to fix it was drive two-footed. Usually after a half hour or so drive it would hold idle fine until the next time. There wasn't anything I could link it to, but I'm thinking the alarm system is doing sometime to cause it cause every time I had to get my car jumped(I work in a quarry during the summer and my car is my boombox :p) after leaving it on too long without a charge it wouldn't hold idle. So it was either the alarm system or a sensor somewhere got screwed up.

My family owns a 91 Lebaron with the 3.0L Mitsubishi that has occasional 'fits' and will stall while sitting at a redlight, or in the most recent case, while driving. So far, the only thing that has helped is to remove the air hose from the throttle body and spray a good throttle body cleaner into it, reving it just enough to keep it from stalling. Last time i did it, it used about half a bottle and let some soak in it for about 5-10 minutes partway through. It's a cheap fix if it will solve your problem.

As far as I can tell, the reason this works on ours is because it cleans out the deposits forming in the IAC circuit.

Good Luck, and let me know is this works!! -JRC

Try cleaning the throttle body. We had some stalling problems with our '95 LeBaron as well and that fixed it right up. If the battery was disconnected at any time before the stalling happened, then computer has a lot more trouble finding idle. All you have to do is get the TB gasket at any Auto Zone or Kragen and clean it with carborator cleaner.

have same car...94 GTC convert and same problem ... but i would just have it in park and off and then start it with gas and quickly shift into drive and then go and it would usually solve it for a good while... i dont really worry about it now.... bc it only happens every now and then the worst part is that the steering goes off and is hard to turn and then the fact that it is embarrasing.... but only happens every once in a while

Umm....if your steering goes out....you need to check your serpentine belt...and the fluid level in power steering. That shouldn't be happening.

the steering shouldn't go out, it should just get a lot harder if the engine stalls because you don't have anything to drive the power steering pump. And then if you do what I did once with my Daytona, luckily i wasn't going very fast, I kept getting a sensor code that would put the car in limp mode, all you had to do was turn the engine off and back on and would be fine, well, I did that but I turned the key too far and locked the steering wheel. I turned the key quickly after I did that.

even if the car is shut off and in gear? like ill be in drive and it will go out then the steering will be gone along with the power
and the check gauges light or mayb engine i cant remember is on... and then i start it up with gas and shift and it will go

Oh, I didn't realize the steering going out was in conjunction with the stalling. If your car is not running, you aren't getting the help from the power steering and it will make turning the wheel difficult.
