Hi everyone! I was researching some aftermarket parts for my car on the Internet and found all these threads about "rice" and everyone making fun of younger people customizing 4 cylinder vehicles. I bought a Mazda 3 for its gas mileage(I get about 37mpg) and with this kind of mpg the car will put me back in my seat in 1st gear. I have experienced the power of a few 8cylinder sports cars and I know mine does not even come close but you get the point. I am 20 years old and I have a performance muffler on my Mazda that is pretty loud because I have hearing problems. I like to hear when i need to shift. I am also thinking about putting a bodykit on the car to make it look wider.
My question is.... does the fact that I am a 20 year old driving a loud Mazda 3 make me RICE???

Yes it makes you rice. You have gauges that show the revs, why the HELL would you put on a loud exhaust so you could shift? that's the most stupid thing i've ever heard. Unless you're also blind i see no reason for you to put that exhaust.

  aznx thats Sig material

and rexload...theres alot of arguments on this forum about rice...its pretty much universally agreed here that rice is a frame of mind...NOT a particular car, or car brand...its the kid that adds a massive wing to their fwd car, puts tons of stickers everywhere, and generally has an attitude problem with everyone else on the road because he/she is soooo fast

oh and a fart can exhaust...thats pretty rice...no matter how much trouble you have hearing...

Nice forum! My first post and people are already calling me stupid.
With the stock muffler I couldn't even tell if my car was on. It bothered me. I guess I just like listening. I also have to move my left arm in order to see the tach. So if I like to hear my motor I am a ricer???
I get all kinds of dirty looks from older people when they hear me driving by. Also all these rednecks cut me off all the time because they are in their ford pickup trucks doubling the speedlimit running stop signs in school areas and they think it's cool and everyone is too slow. One redneck bumped my Mazda at a redlight. I guess he didnt like the fact that I was stopped at "stop here on RED" sign. They all like to pull up to the middle of the road.
How come everytime someone cuts me off or calls me an asshole on the road, it is always an older guy on a bike or a ford pickup truck or a SUV. Why do they call me an asshole? Because when it says "speed limit 45" I go 50 and that is way too slow for them or they don't like the way my car looks or sounds.
I don't race, don't speed, I don't floor it when light turns yellow, I go 15mph in school ares when the sign is flashing. But I guess I have a "riceburner" and of course I am an "asshole" just because I like my 4banger and one more thing don't forget to cut me off in your 8cylinder SUV and then give me a middle finger and talk to your redneck friends about how stupid I am and how gay my car is.

Thanks. that's a pretty good definition for rice. I was looking for the right words to explain it, i think you hit it dead on.

I have to kinda agree with him on that. He sounded competent in his first post and was just asking if it made him rice or not. A response that included a yes/no and the reason for the response would have been sufficient. You didn't need to talk to him as negatively as that.

Anyways i apologize for being harsh in my first post but i just found the idea to be really silly. This is the INTERNET you can take my comments along with everyone else's any way you like, it's not going to effect you the moment you close the webpage so i duno why you're getting all worked up.

i'd say you're probably not rice but what you've done to your car makes me think you don't know much about cars. a loud muffler is absolutely pointless on a stock masda 3 other than to make it loud. i personally find it really annoying when i see a stock civic with a loud ass muffler on and nothing else, there's just no point and it doesn't even sound nice.

the thing about the rednecks and stuff, well, they're rednecks, they're inbred pos's that leech off of society, don't be bothered by them. but i can totally understand the dirty looks you get, your car sounds annoying, people don't like to be annoyed.

oh boy, I got out of control on my last post. Sorry guys I guess I was just having a bad day.

Well yea I guess my idea was to put a noise maker on there (I was not kidding about hearing problems) before I get the funds to make any performance upgrades. I get what "rice" is now, BUT I am selling my Mazda and if I get a Nissan 300zx with 300-320horses and loud and with a wing, is that still RICE? :screwy:

That's great, but no more good gas mileage :frown:. Make sure you get the right 300, it's pretty hard to find a decent TT in my area. Also DO NOT get a 1990 one, that's the first year model and it was filled with problems, try going for a later year one (95/96 being the best)

why would you want to put a wing on, it's just pointless, you're not going to be doing any racing that would take advantage of that wing and it's just going to reduce your gas mileage. i'm more of a function before form, ill make my car louder only if it increases performance, making a car loud for no reason, i think, is just stupid, you're wasting money to annoy other people. also that whole hearing whhen to shift, you can get a bigger tachometer and put it in clear sight and get a shift light that goes on when you need to shift.

Going from a Mazda3 to a 200ZX? All I would say is be friggin careful...your driving a monster of a machine now, not an economy car

and Beef Burito a wing on the back of an AWD car does help to a certain extent...power is being diverted to lighter back end, and you want it firmly planted...Don't get me wrong, you will get along just fine without it, and it doesnt give the benefit a RWD car does...but the EVO and STi both have massive spoilers at the back end, and their not for cosmetic putposes (I think the STi's looks disgusting)

I'm just saying that concidering what he's doing to his car, i doubt he's going to be doing any racing, he won't take advantage of the rear wing. plus he's probably going to get a ricer wing from jc penny or something like that that's just for looks and doesn't actually produce any downforce. i know rear wings can help an awd car but in this case i doubt it will. besides any racing he will be doing will probably be drag racing, in that case a wing won'thelp because it'll create drag and will make his car go slower.

Do what ever makes you happy with your car and don't worry what others think or say about it. Even if mods are just for "looks" or sound, big deal. If you like it that's what counts. With that said, I agree that an overly loud exhaust can annoy other people... and the HP of the offending car has nothing to do with it.

I am actually looking at some 300zxs from 1990-91, didn't know that there are problems with those. Do you know what kind of problems by any chance?! I know someone who had a 1988 Z and he claims it was a very reliable vehicle but that's not the same car...

But yeah I meant there is already a wing on the car i was looking at, it does make the Z look better IMO(!) and no I do not race.

take a look at that, if you were getting one of those years, i'd look to see if the previous owner had them fixed. If the previous owner doesn't even know about those then don't bother. If they know about and already fixed those problems, then go for it. When you ask him/her, try to be discreet to see if they really know there were problems.

Okay, here is an update from me. I just came across this post and felt like writing this.
First of all, I decided to keep my car. Im still in love with 300zx but I dont think I could ever be happy with an under20mpg daily driver.
I was looking for an exhaust system for my car that wouldn't be as loud as the muffler i put on it because everyone was laughing at me. After doing some research I realized that every aftermarket exhaust for my Mazda 3 would be almost just as loud and make it sound even more RICEy.
Sick of being made fun of with my fart cannon muffler, I had someone put the stock muffler back on. (note: I had a fart cannon for about 8months and forgot how it sounded stock). So we put everything together and started the car. That is when I remembered what it used to sound like stock. There was no sound at all! A minute later I got in to drive it back home and had no idea whether the engine was running or not. I looked at the tach (that is positioned in the worst place possible) and the rpms were at 500. It is running. WOW. The next day my girlfriend and I went to visit our friends who lived about 35minutes away. It was so hard to drive with the radio on and we don't even listen to loud music. I would be in 5th gear going 50-55 and then slow down A LITTLE because of the car ahead of me or even slow down going uphill not realizing it and start lugging the engine. I would look at the speedo... ahhh!shift down! Or pulling out on a steep hill(a lot of those in pittsburgh area) - I'm like rolling the window down and sticking my ear out. You might say I am just a bad driver. I may be but I never had any problems when I could hear my engine. Disappoined again...I think I will keep it quiet though and try to get used to it.

tell me, why do you need to hear your engine to determine what the car is doing again?

can you not feel the difference in pulling ability? can you not see/perceive the accelleration (or reduction of)?
are you not aware of other cars on the orad to the extent that you don't notice you are gaining on them and thus going faster than them?
can you not read or see the speedometer or do you just not look at it while driving?
slow down going uphill for what? lugging the engine? you mean you can't feel the engine not pulling?

yes, i am going to call you a bad driver.

and while i'm at it, i'm going to lock this because I don't think anything will be gained by leaving it opened.

PM me if you have a problem with this.
