I am considering buying a 2001 neon but my only concern is how the 3 speed auto is going to limit any upgrades i put on. i can get the car for really cheap and have easy access to parts(i work for a wrecker) but i am just curious whether or not it would be possible to swap in a 5 speed from the same car or if there are any upgrades i could do to make the 3 spd perform better.

i believe u can swap in the 5 speed, u just need to do all the hook-ups, 2001 and up are all hydrolic..i dont know how big of a job it is.., and i also heard of a automatic shifting upgrader..dont know the name off by heart, but i heard it shirps tires when it shifts.., i think that would be neat for automatic.., but obviously, 3 speed auto is going to be much slower than a 5 speed..

i am just curious whether or not it would be possible to swap in a 5 speed from the same carYes it's possible and has been done successfully many times. You can also convert your your car to a cable clutch as opposed to the current hydraulic one, by getting a tranny from a 95-2000 neon and make sure you get the cable bellhousing.
or if there are any upgrades i could do to make the 3 spd perform better. Here is a website that has some good info on the ATX...

thanks for the help. do you know of any places where i could find info on how hard this would be to do? and what would be the advantage of the cable clutch over hydraulic?

cables is much easier to work with!.., and i woudln't consider it to be too hard..but i'm also not a mechanic..and i also know for sure parts would be much easier to find on cable trany's...because you can use anything from 96-2000..parts would be cheaper

do you know of any places where i could find info on how hard this would be to do?It's not hard to do at all, get yourself some type of manual like the FSM, Haynes or Chiltons to help you out.
what would be the advantage of the cable clutch over hydraulic?Only real advantage would be availability of trannies.

i've been doing some searching for parts and the older cable tranny's are definantly cheaper and more readily available. my only concern with that is whether the ecu (i think thats the one, if not ECM, PCM, or BCM) from a 2001 5 spd would be compatible with the older ones.

Since the 95-2001 trannies are the same you won't have any problems with the ECU. I think it's the 2002 and up ECU's that control the tranny.
