My maxima stalled going 65mph in 5th gear. once i got it pulled over it would turn over but not start. Tried spraying starting fluid in the intake and still nothing. I was thinking fuel pump but after spraying starting fluid and no start, i dont know. Possibly spark too but not sure. If anyone has any ideas please post them so when i get home i can try a few things instead of going nuts. Thanks in advance.

...Possibly spark too but not sure. ...

- If there was spark, spray would have an effect
- I keep spare plug in trunk for tst purposes; plugin, groundit, verify spark
- No spark due to: burned fuse, Engine cont relay, broken wire, ign sw, connector contact lost, coil +or gnd or hi volt wires
- check for distr gnd, cam signal
- shorted MAF (test: take connector off)

update, finally pulled out the distributor cap to find that the rotor wont turn when engine is being cranked. pull out the distributor and find that the helical gear down in the housing isnt turning either. Timing belt broke! now im on a quest to determine whether the valves are shot or if its a non interfereing engine, anyone know this? I dont want to take the time to put on the belt to have an engine that is crapped out, I guess the bright side is that i got 230,000 miles out of it. . .

Where do you live and if you live close to me would you want to sell that max?

...Timing belt broke! ...

I know that miracles can happen, however propelling Laws dictate that when two propellers meet, minced meat is the outcome... Pistons&valves have their dates set for that meeting; scheduled tuneup will help -only if- follo-wed.

In other words, Maxima engines valves & pistons have same 'workin area'. Called interference engines. When their timing belt co-ordination disappears, these valves & pistons will smash together. (Theres a engine version where no interference cannot happen; valves and pistons cannot make contact. Lower copression, less juice, more 'user friendly'.)

Compression tst will give u the final verdict.

When I get back home I will do a compression test but i know it is allready gone because i was going 65 up hill, so the rpms were high because of the load. I live in KY, but my uncle owns a junk yard and he has alot of maximas so i have another engine with 63,000 on it, that im going to pull and drop in it. Sorry, but if i don't feel like screwing with it, I'll let you know.

Any opinions as to what would be a good idea to replace on the new motor, while the old motor is out, besides the timing belt and clutch?

... besides the timing belt and clutch?

- O-seals
- exhaust manifold studs to hi quality studs
- check waterpump (? ol 63k original pump maybe better than spare)
- Knock Sensor (?)
