as stated above, my 91 camaro (5.7L) wont go above second gear, but will go into 1st and reverse.. i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what is wrong with it.
do you think the cheapest way to solve the problem would be to buy a new tranny?
how much would can i expect to pay for this type of tranny?
thanks guys..

Goto a junkyard and find one there from a v8 camaro..

are you low on fluid? have you checked the linkage? it may require a rebuild, or you can get a used one... but see if the linkage is lose, and make sure you're not low on tranny fluid

ok i forgot to ask, do you mean you put it into drive and it won't shift out of 1st? or you put it in drive and nothing happens, but it works when you move the shifter into the 1 position?

i put it into D (drive) and it will go into first, then shift into second, and it wont go past that. (nice car btw)
im truthfully not sure what the problem is, i will check the fluid level, but i wouldnt see why it would go into first and second and then stop.
thanks for the great response time, you guys are very helpful.

get underneath the car, and on the drivers side of the transmission is a place where a cable coming from your shifter lever goes to, check the cable for being loose, and see if the gear selecter that it moves is able to be moved freely

If it was the linkage it wouldnt allow him to get into drive.. atleast for me it went like that.

I just dont understand why it wont go above second, i wish i knew how an automatic tranny worked so i could source the problem, but i dont. I think i will just go ahead and buy a tranny from a junkyard, im getting one for around 250 - 300, so its not too bad, i can install myself too.
thanks alot for the helpful suggestions.

You have a confusing problem with your trans...If the trans needed a rebuild, then it would shift to third...but it would be like it had shifted to neutral...I would think it was the shift control, not the mechanical parts of the trans itself.
