engine timeing

hi guys I;m kinda new at this but I;ll try my daughter has a 95 neon and the water pump froze up and destroyed the belt and the outer belt cover what I would like to know is the timeing marks in my haynes book it says to put the timeing mark 3 notches or spaces before top dead center I tried this but it doesn't even want to fire I down loaded some pages from jball.neons.org and it fires right up but runs ruff I don;t have the air box on it yet could that be it alsowhere can I get the outside belt cover and aftermarket breather theres also a hose that comes up from the bottom of the air tube it goes somewere under the intake manifold can this be blocked off I hope you guys can help me because I;m not used to working on these types of cars but I like to work on cars brewster1950:banghead:

the manual is for the DOHC. if you have a SOHC then move the crank 1/2 Counterclock and with a big flat screwdriver move the tensioner to position. then turn the engine 2 coplete revolutions and check that marks match, if no start over and revise again.
I got bad news............ almost forgot......... you have most likely bent all of the intake valves. This hapened to me once when my tenssioner gave up. check the compression on the engine..... (I'm sorry)

Since your belt broke and the neon engine is an interference engine you more than likely bent some valves. They will need to be replaced. Do as maykelcj suggests and check your compression.

don't forget to sit the valves and change the valve seals while you are at it.
