where does my oil go?

Ok, here's the situation. Several times now, I have noticed that when I change my oil, not enough is draining out. The crankase is topped up to the full line, but only two litres (do you use litres in the states?) come out. So I change my friends oil today, same engine, and there is way more oil coming out of hers, ie. the correct amount. My manual says that the capacity of the crankcase and filter is 3.3 litres.
What gives, is my oil turning to sludge and accumulating in my oil pan?
If I take off the oil pan, do I need to replace the gasket?

In the states we use quarts one quart=0.9l , you can take the oil pan out and check for sludge and clean the oil pan, one other reason is that the oil return holes from the head might be obstructed or with deposits on them so the oil takes a longer time to go down in the crankcase, for the oil pan you can use hi temperature silicone instead of the cork gasket.

Assuming you are measuring both cars before the oil change - I gotta ask - are the dipsticks the same length? Draining on a hill/slope? Tilted one way or the other? Using the same drain pan to compare? Doing something different?

Yeah, I changed the oil in both cars at the same time. Same evrything except that her car is a 96, and mine is a 95. Drain pan was about half full from my car, and was only an inch from the top. I poured both back into differant one gallon containers for disposal. I filled mine a little over half full, and hers was almost to the top. These engines are both 1.o litres. Both were run before draining.

Your engine is probably burning it. Some metros that are driven a lot on the highway with an auto trans(constant high RPM's) are prone to the oil rings wearing out. What weight of oil do you use? Perhaps try using an engine flush in your car. Your oil rings could have siezed with carbon and funk on them. If you don't notice smoke, it could be passing oil through the exhaust valve seals. Try 10w30 oil if you aren't already. And keep an eye on the oil level.

Nope only between filling and the next oil change silly....
Check it weekly and watch for it going down, could be leaks and could be burning.. According to GM rtv is enough to seal pan...

Your engine is probably burning it.
If you read further back, you would see that the oil was topped up to the full mark on the dipstick in both vehicles. Both metros have oil leaks, so we are both checking oil levels regularily. My car leaks oil at the head gasket. It may burn some as well, but it isn't showing in the exhaust. There are no signs of coolant being burned, in fact, I haven't had to add any for 3 years.
Try 10w30 oil if you aren't already. And keep an eye on the oil level.
I can't use it. It gets down to -25c/-13f here regularly, so that stuff will cause me to seize up. I do use it in the summer though.

I have a 95 3 cyl manual. My driving habits are typically 95 percnet city.
My compresion is a little low, but I don't know if it is caused by the head gasket leak, or worn rings. Before the leak occured, I believe I was loosing a quart/litre between changes 5000 km/ 3100 miles.
Anyway, this is all pointless because we both start with the same amount in the crankcase, according to the dipsticks, but only 2 and a half quarts come out of mine.

Oops, I mis-read his original post :banghead: I thought he meant it was full when he first changed it :)
Your oil could be pretty thick if it's cold out. Did you let the car warm up for a few minutes before you drained the oil? Perhaps you should pull your oil pan and check it, you may have a bunch of sludge built up in the bottom of it.

Like I said earlier in this thread, the oil was drained when the engine was hot. I also guessed that it may be sludge, and was looking for a second opinion. I know you're getting picked on lately, so I want you to know that I sk this with the best possible intentions. Geozuki, why do you reply to threads when you have only read half the information? I always try to write all the relevant info with my first question, so I don't have to write it later.

This information is in my very first post in this thread. I'll copy it here for you.

I appreciate everyones imput here, except iheartguysinmetros, and wildcherrypepsi. It's hard to find good advice for free, so if it sounds like I'm critisizing, then consider this thought. My remark to read the whole post may have been to save you the time of asking questions already answered, thereby streamlining the process for all involved. If you still think I'm a jerk, go ahead, I don't care. I had no ill intentions, and still don't. I believe it was you who said something like, "it's just an automotive forum.:smokin:" My thoughts exactly. :sunglasse

try using synthetic oil and drain while the engine is still warm. Synthetic oil acts as an engine cleaner because it does not gung up as non-synthetic does, melting away gunk. Take the cap off too when draining.
