Hello everyone, Ive just bought a 2002 granprix gtp coupe. MMM shes nice. I was wondering how hard it would be to put an amp in. Also how can I tell if its the boss stereo system. I also was looking into adding headers eventualy. I want to get some nice rumbling out of her. any suggestions on brands?
Thanks
Thanks

Eh, if your wanting to add headers for the sound just get an exhaust system.

oh no, not just for the sound for performence too :) . I'm also looking into adding a K & N.

read the thread about longer oil filters (it includes an article on K&N air filters too) before you purchase a K&N filter. A little education goes a long way before putting your money on something that may have no advantage, but many shortcomings, especially if your car isn't modded.

Headers are too expensive and will not give you any better exhaust sound. They will give you a noticeable horsepower increase. Go with the mufflers (Borla, etc.) from the popular CAT Back exhaust systems. On header brand the two most popular are SLP and TOG (The Old Guys). I have SLP headers on my GTP.
If you have a Bose sound system you will see the amp located in the trunk.

Installing an amp is not very hard. It really depends what you are planning to add to it. Are you adding a sub box, or just planning on powering the factory speakers. The install of the amp is mainly running a power wire from the battery to the trunk. For that you just find a grommet to run the wire from inside the car to the engine compartment. My 98 gtp had a big rectangular grommet and harness on the firewall of the passenger side I used. You then run the cable back to the trunk and hide the wire. You then run a wire from a switched power source back to the trunk for the remote on the amp. If running multiple amps you need to go larger on the power wire and split it in the trunk for each amp. If you give me an idea as to what you want to run I can give you better info as to wire gauge and splitters and such.
Do the cat back exaust first, if you intend on doing more mods then go with the headers after them. A CAI, reprogrammed pcm, sc pulley can be done first and will really compliment the headers then. IMO based on price and amount of work those done first are your best bang for the buck.

Hey, Thanks for the replys.
Well I have a sub and amp with all the wires I need from my last car. What I wasnt sure of is if the factory has an output line that i can use for my sub speaker.
Also. as far as changing the pulleys goes, I was doing some reading about it and I dont really understand how it improves performence. It seems to me im just changing the pulley I have to a smaller one?
I was looking into getting the pc reprogrammed for sure. Cat back and high-flow cat is a definite. but i figure while im under there doing something like that I might as well do the headers too. So il wait till I can afford them.
Anyone have any specific brands that they like as far as headers and exaughts goes? I can only find "the other guy" and SPL(i think thats what they are) headers.
As far as the cold air filters. I am hesatent in adding one. although it does seem they have a great benefit in theory. I will defintly read the articles more thouroughly. It seems to me though that a car with a supercharger really should be getting alot more air flow then a standard filter in a box can give.
I have seen that grand ams have "ram-air" that use the scoops in-between the headlights and actualy forces the air into the air box. Thinking about it im not sure if the grand prix's similiar scoops go through into the engine bay. if they do is there a system that does this like the grand am?
Thanks everyone. im very happy with my new car. Shes a beauty.

oh and its not a bose stereo system. Its the standard cd player that has manual eq

The smaller pulley increases boost by increasing the speed at which the supercharger spins at any given engine RPM.

The smaller supercharger pulley is the best bang for the cost. The stock is 3.8". A good street SC pulley is 3.4". Smaller pulley size is equal to more hp and torque by providing more boost. It is a well documented mod on GTPs.
A CAI is a good mod with a smaller SC pulley to help control/reduce knock retard (KR). The stock airbox also draws in air from the headlight area. The advantage of a CAI is more airflow especially when you have other mods such as the SC pulley, PCM and exhaust mods.
If you decide to get headers then that is the best time to do additional exhaust system mods. TOG or SLP are the most common. Flip a coin.

whats CAI?

Cold Air Intake. It's an air filter and tube assembly that replaces your stock air box.

oh ok heh. Yea shoulda realized that. So I guess the real question should be in what order I do my mods. The exhaust system will be last since its the most expensive.
Should I get a reprogramed computer before doing the pulley. My stock computer will get confused by my mods so its wise to do the comp first right?

Also, there are FWI (fender well intakes) which is just another variation. The name brand CAIs like Trasher have protective covers, heats shields for isolation from engine heat and normally a place to properly mount the powertrain control module (PCM) which will be exposed when the stock air box is removed for a CAI/FWI mod.

I would get the PCM first. The re-programmed settings and programming will help take advantage of the mods and give you more bang for the buck.
DHP (Digital Horsepower) dropped the price down to $99.

Yea fenderwell ones seem like the best bet. More chance to get cold air. I was looking into one at pfyc but i dont think it has a method of mounting PCM. although im sure I could find a place. I was also looking into the one by SLP that alows you to mount it to a hood with scoops. That would mean replacing the hood and getting it painted. Il probaly wait if i do decide on that and get a fenderwell.

Awesome. Thanks for the help and input. il get my comp reprogramed add a pulley. then probaly a cold air filter. Il let everyone know how it goes :)
thanks again!
thanks again!

If you are using any amp with power you will want to run a cable from the battery back to the trunk. Minimum cable size is 8gauge bigger if the amp is huge and/or if you run multiple amps

what about the audio signal? where do i pick that up from..is there an output on the factory stereo for amps?

Are you planning on using the factory radio? If you are then you will have to run your speaker outputs from the radio to the trunk. You will then either need an amp that has what they call high level inputs, or an adapter to convert to rca cables. If you are using an aftermarket head unit then run the rca cables from the connections on the radio to the trunk.

You can always splice into the rear speaker wires in the trunk instead of running all new wire form the factory radio back to the amp's high level input or RCA converter. If you have an aftermarket radio, run RCA cables, as you'll get much cleaner sound. The factory radio has no provisions for RCA cable hook-up.
