My compression results

Yeah, they were terrible and I'm hoping it's not the rings. They were as follows:
90-60-5(barely moved)-30.

a leak down would tell you what it is

OUCH, do you even HAVE a number 3 cylinder lol!

Yeah, I'm not sure what the leakdown is but I'm going to try to place a little bit of oil in each cylinder and see if the compression goes up.

a leak down is when you put pressurized air in the cylinders. then listen for the leak. then depending where the leak is tells you what to check first

im sure there has to be some ring damage. that'd probably be a cheaper fix then the head. you compression should be around 200ish.

Reall? The rings would be cheaper than the head?
FrodoGT
03-12-2006, 05:26 PM
Hell yeah tey would, I think for a 4 cylinder it shouldnt be more than $50, I havent looked but for my friends camaro it was 49 at NAPA.

I was under the impression that it would be cheaper and easier to just replace the head.

I dunno what engine you have but I just lookjed it up for a 91 civic at 66.49...

idi you break a timing belt and just replace the belt? them numbers are crazy low. what happend. last time i saw numbers that low it was bent valves.

I would think youd have to have like no rings for compression that bad, so I would have to agree in saying, wtf? You must have one messed up set of valves, possibly in addition to the rings.

It's a 1988 Civic DX, 1.5L. Yeah, I know there's something wrong with those numbers. I'm hoping it's just the head, a nice quick fix.

well a used dx head will probably go for extremly cheap. you can also try autohausaz.com for rings and bearings

Excellent, thanks for the responses you guys. I'm pretty close to having enough to jsut go ahead and either throw in another stock motor or perhaps a ZC. My only question is this, is it possible and/or feasable to add a turbo onto a ZC motor on an automatic transmission? Thanks.
FrodoGT
03-13-2006, 04:53 PM
Hell yes it is, the turbo has no connection to the transmission....

Those are some sad results. I did a compression test on one of my cars today and hit 160 across the board except on number 3, which wouldnt even read.... I think the guage yawned at one point. I'm thinking I have a hole in the piston.... woofuckinghoo.

So I can put in a ZC and turbo and it won't be a problem? If so then I might just keep this car for a while.

Are you sure you did the compression test properly?
draybook
03-13-2006, 10:19 PM
Yeah, my brother in law did it and he had just tested his Prelude so there was nothing wrong with the procedure or the tester.

Yeah, alot of people turbo ZC's its a pretty good combo actually, I dunno about how great it would be with an auto trans though..regarding power/shift and things..but iot would work, if your going to swap the engine you may as well do an auto/manual swap as well, it wouldnt cost much, and if your mechanically, and slightly electrically inclined you could pull it off with ease...this is assuming the engine you get has a trans (the cost part).

I'm thinking about getting the ZC motor for now and next income tax refund next year I could do the auto to manual swap and throw in the turbo.

Auto plus turbo is a decent combo. But there is more to it with a Honda, especially a ZC... Aren't DOHC ZC motors relatively high compression? Wouldn't this require more tuning? Either way, you're going to have to run high octane fuel.
FrodoGT
03-14-2006, 02:27 PM
The ZC is not USDM, youd have to run high octane no matter what....Their standards are different and fuels have higher octane...

Here's a question. If I throw in a zc motor into my automatic, will I HAVE to use an auto pg7 ecu or can it be for a 5 speed?
duffman868
03-14-2006, 11:28 PM
it will need to be auto. you can runa auto in a 5speed but not the other way around

What should the average compression be on a 91 civic si? I got a reading of 75ish across the board. That was using a tester you screw in the sparkplug holes and crank the engine over.

Instead of starting a new thread i am bringing this one back.
I just tested my compression for the first time and i got 150psi in all cylinders. Is this good? By the way, my car has 241,700 miles on orig. engine and tranny. I used to burn a lot of oil until i put in some oil treatment.
It's a D16a6
