I have a 93 Ford Thunderbird LX, I have replaced the stock stereo with an after market stereo and I was going down the road with the volume a little loud and It just turned off as in kaput. I have also checked both proper fuses which include the radio and the car's fuse block, they are not blown. When I put my stock stereo back in the only thing that worked was the illumination lites came on but there was no sound. I did heard the speakres make a sound but there was no music or any digital indicators on the stearo its self. Is their any thing else that could have caused this problem, any help would be greatly appricated. Also I do not belive that the issue is with the cd player its self because the stock stearo does not work as well.

Maybe it has a short in the stock wiring somewhere? If its sucking too much power through those old wires it could have shorted them out somewhere along the way...

Well the stock radio worked fine at high levels? Where would a short usually occur that would cause this? Like I said earlier on, the illumination lights inside the radio come on but not the sound?
Now just for kicks, what if the battery wire got soooo hot that it shorted? I could just run a new wire and solve the issue? Holy fuck I never even thought of using a test light, that would check at least my power wires.
Still any help would be appreciated.

I feel prett stupid right about now, I just used the test light on the wires and the battery wire is the rebel quiter. Where does this wire usually run to? I know this is not the correct forum for this question but I tried the Thunderbird forums and no one likes to help.

The short could occur anywhere from the radio to the fusebox. The illumination and actual power runs off two different wires in other cars usually, so your illumination wire should be fine then.
A test light would work very nicely in this situation. :)

A couple of thoughts:
First of all does the wire that runs from the radio to the fuse box go directly to the fuse box or does it pass go and collect $200? In my owners manual the fuse that runs the radio also runs the power antenna and the antenna works so does that mean that there is seperate wires for the 2?
And yes I felt pretty stupid that I never thought of that to begin with, the test light is a gift from the goods unless the bulb inside blows then the nothing works.

I've had that happen before and couldn't figure out why nothing had power. I finally got the thought to stick it on the battery posts and it still didn't work and I knew something was up... Damn bulbs... lol
Anyways... On all the aftermarket radios I've installed, there was several wires for different components...
Red - Power
Blue - Power Antenna (this blue wire is simply a signal wire for the relay usually mounted under the antenna. It has nothing to do with power to the radio.)
Yellow - Illumination
Orange - Memory
I have also encountered several that had the illumination and memory running on the same wire, in which case it was yellow with an orange stripe on it. The power should go nowhere but from the back of the radio straight to your fusebox. If it does go anywhere else then your car is gay. lol A good way to test if there is a short in your power wire is to plug in your new cd player and then disconnect your power wire and connect it instead to a wire that goes straight to the battery.
BUT!... I am in no way liable if you blow a capacitor inside your radio for testing it that way. lol :)

Good to go!!! Replaced the wire with a new one straight from the battery, and now the stereo works great. Thanks crow for the help.

The red wire was shorted out then?

The Yellow wire was shorted out so I ran a new wire from the battery. Red would be Acc. and that one made the test light go so crazy that it lit right up!!
