1991 s-10 rear won't lock

the rear hatch will not lock and its an easy target for someone to brake into.i have tried putting some fine graphite in the key hole, thinking the lock was stuck but it did not help. any ideas?

left turn on the handle for the door and a right turn for the glass both open and close fine but lock will not engage
