Skipped timing?

I have a feeling my car skipped a few teeth on the cam gear. Its a 95 ex sedan with auto trans and 180k miles. I was accelerating from a stoplight at normal throttle and suddenly it sounded like I was on it at high revs, really loud except there was no power and heavy engine braking on or off throttle. Car will still start with generous throttle and stay running but maxes out at 1850rpm. I don't have the money to take it into a shop and I have limited experience with new cars or imports. Do you think it's just a timing belt gone bad? Or is there another thing I should be checking into? I got the service records from the previous owner spanning the last 75k miles and 5 years but I cannot find any record of the timing belt being replaced which leads me to believe this is the case. But if there's something else that I should be looking into, please let me know.

heavy braking when engine is still running and bliping,

assuming brakes system is fine, id say you have a power issue.

put a multimeter on the battery and alternator.
