First of all HI to everyone on this forum, I am new member here.
Now about my problem:
Few days ago my jimmy didnt want to start, I was in a hurry to get to work so I didnt pay atension is fuel pump working or not. Anyhow next morning I turn the key and car works fine. I went to local mechanic and replaced fuel filter - just in case (it was bad).
Now I am at work and I went to buy somthink on my break, but it wont start again. This time I was listening and fuel pump does not work (I cant hear it).
Now I am wondering -how does fuel pump die? would it just stop and never start again or sometimes it will.
Is there anything else I should suspect, or this is it and I have to spend a good amount of $$ to fix this.
My Jimmy is 1999 two door 4.3L with over 120K miles
Please if you could give any opinions/ideas
Thank you

Erratic fuel pump operation or an inoperative fuel pump can be caused by any one of several things:
● Poor wiring and/or connections
● Faulty fuel pump relay
● "Dead spot" in the armature of the pump motor
to name a few.
Confirming that both voltage and ground are available at the fuel pump is a "must" before condemning the pump. Ground is supplied to the pump continuously through a black wire from the pump to the frame of the vehicle. Voltage to the pump is supplied through a grey wire when the key is initially turned to the "ON" position for approximately 2 to 3 seconds. This allows the pump to prime the fuel system. Voltage to the fuel pump is supplied continuously any time the key is in the “CRANK” position. Once the engine is running, voltage is supplied to the fuel pump when the key is in the “ON” position. If the engine stalls, the key is turned off, or the voltage supply is otherwise interrupted, the fuel pump will shut down. Once the voltage supply and ground circuits are known to be good, a fuel pressure test should be performed.

Thank you on reply old_master.
Well I had my jimmy in parking lot in front of the store I work, so I had it towed to my mechanic. He told me to crank it while he was hamering lightly fuel tank and car started, after which he said it should be fuel pump. After we started it I drove it for about 5 miles just to see will it run good - and it did run great. Now as I dont have the money to fix it I left the car there until my next paycheck.
Mechanic where I left the car is the guy I know for years now and I am sure he wont charge me for pump and replace it if its not needed. He did say that it might not be that and he will do the best he can, but in case it needs replacing it will cost me $200 labor and about $280 for the pump. I dont know are these prices good or not, but there is not much that I can do I gues.

The price sounds reasonable for a shop to do the work. Good luck, post back results.

Well finaly I got jimmy fixed, but price went up to $620. He said that fuel pump for '99 was more expensive than what he thought. I gues he checked wrong year infirst place.
Anyhow it was the fuel pump, so now it works good.
Funny story is that I had a sign for sale in it before pump went bad and I thought I sell it for at least 3k; so one guy comes looks the car and drives it and offers me $2800 and I say no, few days after that I had ball joints fixed and now the fuel pump. My wife drives this car and its so tough having a baby and a two door car. Now I have no clue how much to tryto sell it for.
Thanks again for help and info.

DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR KELLY BLUE BOOK, AND ANOTHER ONE FOR NADA, PUT IN ALL THE OPTIONS, THE MILAGE WILL KNOCK IT DOWN A BIT, AND BOTH THE LISTINGS WILL GIVE YOU TRADE-IN, HI AND LOW RETAIL, WHICH ARE THE NUMBERS THE CAR LOT WOULD CHARGE TO SELL IT TO YOU.
JUST A ROUGH NUMBER, AND NOW YOU'VE DONE THE WORK, IF THE INSIDE/OUTSIDE IS GOOD TO ABOVE AVERAGE, I'D START AT 5K AND SEE.
