I need to replace the turn signal/cruise control unit from the steering column. Does anyone know the easiest way to do it? Thanks!

Are you referring to the turn signal/cruise control lever or the turn signal switch?

This is not a hard process, but it can be a frustrating one. Start by removing the steering wheel, then the black plastic cover, then the locking plate (bare with me, I am trying to do this from memory). At this point, you should be looking at the internals of the turn signal switch, which has 3 screws holding it in (you will have the move the lever one way or the other to access one of them). Before removing the screws, remove the turn signal lever itself - If I remember correctly, you have to push it in towards the column (along its own axis), then twist it gently (I dont remember which way). Now remove the 3 screws. Next, remove the 2 dash access plates under the column (1 plastic, 1 metal). The wires from the switch run inside the bottom of the column past the dash face, then come out through a black plastic sleeve. You can wiggle the switch harness to see which wires they are, then follow them to their connector further down on the column. Disconnect the harness (its a pain), then snake the harness up through the black plastic sleeve as you pull the switch assembly out of the column (be patient, its a REAL pain and its gonna fight with you). Reassembly is the reverse process. Any questions, feel free to ask - hope this helps!

GOLIATHGMC has got it. The only thing I would add is that I don't think you have to twist the lever before you pull it out. Just give it a good tug. Other than that, be patient.

reviving an old thread....
Is it possible to replace only the lever without removing the steering wheel?

ftn1975,
wow....quite a long time for this thread:wink:
No, I dont believe it is possible. Tearing the column down to that point is not hard, and I bet you will tear your hair out trying to mess with it otherwise. Not worth the effort to try to outsmart it IMHO.
Good Luck!

GOLIATHGMC,
looking at it closely, it seems it may be possible, but could do more harm than good trying. And yeah, could also lose allot of hair in the process. I will go ahead and pull the steering wheel. Should be much easier.
Thanks
