so i saw a commercial last night for Lunesta, a sleeping pill that helps you fall asleep. I've always had a hard time falling asleep. it usually takes me like an hour, after lying down in bed, listening to music or whatever, for me to fall asleep. i've tried to turn the music off but it doesn't help. I was wondering if anyone had taken any sort of sleeping pill to help you fall asleep. either ambien, lunest, xanax, or whatever else is out there? i may go talk to my Dr. over spring break to discuss this and see what he says.

I'm guessing you're still young, so you really don't want to get hooked on those pills; especially xanax which is a nerve pill. I've lost a best friend because of his mindless addiction to xanax. Anyway, try drinking a beer before going to sleep. Tylenol PMs actually might help if you're really struggling to catch some zzzs

i was thinkin of tryin something like tylenol PM first, as far as the whole beer thing goes. i'd be down with it other than i'm trying to cut my alcohol intake. does stress have anything to do with sleep patterns? i'm just wonderin, partially because there is a lot of stress in my life right now.

If you used to drink a good amount like almost every night then all of a sudden stopped thats why you can't fall asleep. The alcohol helps you sleep and your body gets used to after a while even if you just drink like 2 or 3 beers a day and then stop, your body will kind of go through withdrawl... if thats the case then thats probabaly why you can fall asleep.

A lot of the time when you can't fall asleep its because of you diet... Try changeing your diet around a little that might help a little. Plus try working out like lifting, when I lift I find it easier to fall asleep and usually I feel a lot more refreshed when I wake up too.

I took ambien once and tripped the fuck out. If you do take a sleeping pill, don't force yourself to stay awake because your mind will not be working right.

whenever i work out it is usually later at night, partly because the gym is more empty and because i have so much HW to work on. i usually get done around 10 or 10:30. i come home take a shower and get ready for bed. but i'm never tired. it's almost as though i have more energy afterwards. i will admit though i do wake up more refreshed afterwards. i'll try and change my diet. it's hard since i'm always on the go and am in college. you know how those diets are, pretty shitty.

Working out that late doesnt help, I would try to start that earlier, and stress does an assload of weird things to you. For me when its bad, my kidneys start hurting extremely bad.

Usually takes me an hour-hour and a half to fall asleep, but if I take that nyquill nightime stuff I'm out in twenty minutes everytime.

I dont know man, I personally wouldnt take any sleeping pills because you then rely on them to goto sleep from there on.. its better to goto sleep without having to take anything.. do something that will make you tired though, thats what I do.

that's probably because after the workout you'll have a rush on endorphine, like morphine it gives you a more awake and alert feeling. it's like an adrenaline rush. that's what's keeping you awake, or at least part of it.

Limit your caffeine - no coffee, cokes, chocolate - stuff like that. Even if you have caffeine several hours before bedtime it still affects your sleep pattern.

Get some benadryl. I asked my Dr. for some sleeping pills last time I was in there and she told me to take some benadryl because it's just as powerfull if not more than most sleeping pills.

I take Nyquil, ativan, & valium to an excess. I think it's actually becoming an issue. Been taking Nyquil for like 3 months straight before bed. Ativan and valium daily for other reasons but they also help with sleep.

go to wal-mart or where ever and in the vitamin aisle there is a supplement called Melatonin. Its a dietary supplement that helps to establish normal sleep patterns. The back of the bottle reads " Melatonin supports healthy sleep patterns. The body naturally releases melatonin in response to changes in light, with melatonin levels rising at night. It is in this way that melatonin helps promote healthy sleep patterns."

I was having a hard time sleeping after I left my job because my schedule was all screwed up. I started taking these 1 a night about 20-30 minutes before bed and it actually did help. Also its not a "drugged" feeling of sleepyness. It feels natural. Maybe because it is not as sure fire as a drug but hey if it works all the better if it doesn't oh well.

Another thing to try is to get in the habit of taking a calcium/magnesium/zinc vitamin tablet every morning. I've read that proper levels of calcium/magnesium/zinc can help sleep patterns. I found that when I take a regular dose of vitamins(centrum multi vitamin) and a C/M/Z pill I feel and sleep much better all around.

of course it could all just be in my head:screwy:

hahaha

I can have a hard time getting to sleep if i'm stressed.

Tried classical music? Do you excersize? Do you eat/drink anything before you go to sleep? How long are you typically awake for? Do you get up early?

When I was a kid I was never able to fall asleep. I could lay in bed for hours and just not be able to sleep. But ever since I was about 19-20 and work a full 8-10 hours a day I'm usually in bed by 9:30 and asleep by 10.

My advice, don't get yourself hooked on pills or anything like that, keep yourself busy during the day and wear yourself out, after a couple weeks of that I'm sure you'll be able to sleep at night.

tylenol pm works great...the first night. Then the second night it hardly works at all. I've taken it plenty of times as i usually have a hard time sleeping. I have to take breaks between days in order for it to actually work.

Yes. Working out just before bed also keeps you awake. Caffeine after about 3-4pm can also affect your sleep patterns. Sounds like you have several things that are making it tough to go to sleep. Try altering the things you can control and see how it goes before you fall for a drug company's advertising.

yeah, i really don't intake that much caffeine. last night i went to the gym earlier, did more homework to help relieve the stress also. it was actually easier to fall asleep last night. fell asleep at like 12 instead of the regular 1:30 or 2. the more i think about it the worse of an idea sleeping pills sound. i'll just try and find more stuff to cram into my day to make me more and more tired.

Ha-ha, my wife loves that show....I can watch maybe once a week, if that.

Highteknology, no sense filling your schedule, just manage your time and allow some winding down time at the end of the day.

Best thing to do is be more active during daylight. Not necceserily exercising, just hang around people all day.. just more.. eagerly, or something. And taking a shower 30min before go to bed. Dont eat anything right before going to sleep though, gives ypu hella lot gas next day.

yeah i noticed that about showers too. unfortunately my state is in a drought, who am i kidding, i live in the f'ing desert, there's no water here. because of this i try and conserve water. i think after this week i'll be doin better though, i'll be able to catch up on some needed sleep and just relax.

Just because sleeping pills and alcohol help you fall asleep doesn't mean that they're actually helping you.

They inhibit REM sleep, which is the only time your body repairs itself. Don't do any of that.

Try to do things that aren't damaging to your body. Exercise earlier in the day, because exercising gives you more energy. Before you go to bed, do boring things like homework and stuff.

Watching TV sometimes helps me fall asleep, and so does reading...

my last post was 1:30 am my time, but it is still late. but that is when i started my spring break, so that is one exception to my sleepin problems. last night was much easier to fall asleep seeing how i drank a bottle of champagne.

as for the masturbating idea. first off my friend did it 16 times in a row and said that he developd a blister on his "friend" maybe he should learn about lube or something. secondly, there's a quote form 40 Year Old Virgin that goes soemthing like this "you know what's fun? you take 3 excedrin pm and try and masturbate before you fall asleep. Either way you win" maybe i should try that :dunno:

Unfortunately, everyone's different, so it's tough to recommend one definite solution. However, several suggestions already posted have been proven to aid in the process of falling asleep (and getting the most out of what sleep you DO get):

1. Avoid alcoholic substances before bed. Alcohol shrinks blood vessels, which will initially make you feel drowsier -- but that's most likely because your brain is being starved to whatever degree for blood. In addition, this will mean that the sleep you do get will will be less refreshing, since you'll end up spending much more time in the deep sleep stage where there is little benefit for the brain (as Nicole noted, alcohol will severely inhibit REM sleep, which is the middle stage of the natural sleep cycle, and the part most useful to the brain.)

2. Working out at night can be beneficial, as it will relax your muscles. However, any exercise undertaken shouldn't be done right before bed -- ideally you want to provide a couple hours for the chemicals to settle down before you try to fall asleep.

3. If you do consume any food late at night, make sure it's something simple -- a bowl of Special K, Cheerios, etc. Avoid marshmallows, cocoa, and other sugary cereals. Also allow at least a half hour or so between eating and bed.

4. Experiment a bit and see if some sort of music or reading or combination of both before bed doesn't help. Shakuhachi music does excellent for me (nice and relaxing.)
