Gas Mileage Improvements

I have searched this forums for a while and have only found a little bit on improving gas mileage..........

Right now I get about 14-15 MPG and I know this truck should get better mileage

So if anyone knows of specific ways to improve gas mileage please post it here

Anything besides basic tune-ups and MAF sensors if you know of anything else........

- maintain proper tire presure
- remove unneeded weight (brush guards, sub boxes, running boards, etc), or go on a diet
- if u desire, switch engine oil, trans fluid, and gear oil to synthetic
- use cruise control more often

i'm also open to other ideas on how to improve gas mileage. right now im getting between 13-14 mpg with about 95% city driving. during the summer (with the better gas formulas) i was getting 16 mpg (17.5 mpg with acetone).

Acetone? You can try adding 1oz/5 gallons in the tank....I've seen some say up to 3 mpg increase. I was going to try it on the next fillup...

Well, I'm also thinking of things that I can do. I recently realized that I was driving with the front defrosters (climate control) on all the time, which kicked the compressor on now and then. Turning that off helped me for 1-2mpg. Maybe try different types of gas/gas stations. Maybe change the type/weight oil you are using, be careful if you've never used synthetic because I think that's why my original rear main seal started to leak really bad. Someone on this site mentioned loosing some weight...speaker boxes, ... Other than that, all I know of is just the regular maintenance.

i used 3oz/10 gallons. acetone does not give a mpg improvement with the winter gas formulas. i lost my 1-2mpg increase when the gas formulas switched from summer to winter. i think the summer formula is reintroduced between april and may.

I tried that acetone for 1 tank and didn't see the difference, but will try again, this time with maybe 3-4 tanks.
It's weird that there are mixed results with this.

the acetone "cycle";
- run 3 tanks with whatever dosage u want
- on the 4th tank, use no acetone
- reset the ecu each time u use the acetone dosage

heres a thread from a while ago about this;

Our 95 Blazer gets 16.5+ MPG, mostly I would say town driving as we live 5 miles from town, but it is not like we pull out on a freeway and hit 65 to town. I have two stops minimum to town.

Our 93 Blazer is getting 12-13 MPG right now, both use the same Vortec 4.3, both travel the same routes to and from home. My wife drives the 95 and beats me home and to town every day. The 95 just simply runs 100% smoother than the 93. I replaced the CPI and nut kits when I bought the 93 back in November or October but for the past few months it has had a horrible stumble or hesitation just off idle at various times, sometimes cold, sometimes hot. I get no check engine light, no foul smell from the exhaust.

The 95 has 116K and the 93 has 114K. I'm going to tear the upper plenum off this weekend and see if by chance the nut kit or pressure regulator is leaking. A couple hours of my time and a 6 dollar gasket I feel would be money well spent.

On the highway and anything above just off idle and the 93 Blazer runs great. It has had a full tune-up; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, injector assembly, nut kits, tranny fluid and filter, EGR valve was spotless and had already had the gasket replaced with a screened gasket, but I replaced it again as I didn't know this until disassembly.

My 2000 is wierd or its just the gas I get....sometimes I will get as much as 16 mpg in city driving and others 14??? And the last trip I took....about a 3 and a half hour highway drive I actually got 26 mpg....I was stunned because I usually get around 22 to 23 highway driving...just using regular gas and no additives....actually it happens once in a while where I will get over 25 mpg its just weird....and no I wasnt going downhill in a tornado...lol....actually I had a side wind from the right front....thats why I cant believe my calculations...which I check numerous times...

The only thing that I have found that can temporarily fix my gas problems is fuel injector cleaner. It works real good for about a couple of months, im looking for something that is worthwhile

right before it snowed last, the outside temp got down to about 20 degrees. i desided to try a bottle of prestone fuel injector cleaner w/gas antifreze. needless to say my mpg went from an already low 13mpg to about 10mpg. prestone would not refund my 5 bucks either.

That is the alcohol ruining your economy.

Use a proper fuel from a reputable name brand station and you won't need antifreeze.

Yeah I got 24 miles to work which is mostly highway, but even still when I just putz around the town I can get close to 19. These are all just with me doing all of the calculations when I fill up, so nothing is exact. I have to do it though because the gas gauge doesnt work:banghead:

You are very luck guys.
I have a 1995 Blazer LT, 4x4, Vortec, VIN "W", 132000 miles.

I only get 11 - 12 MPG. I've never seen 13 MPG. :shakehead
99 % of my miles are city driving. And from home to work it's only 5 miles. But it takes me 15 to 20 minutes of driving time. Maybe this explains my MPG. :frown:

I will go out of town next month. About 700 miles to the south.
I'll take my notes and see what I get.

I still think it's a good idea to do a tune-up.
So far I'v only replaced PCV and air filter and installed the oil-catch-can.

thanks.

That is interesting and odd on the fuel injecter cleaner.
How much more mileage do it give you?
And does it keep on helping even after the tank of cleaner has been run threw the engine?
Do you have any records of gas mileage before the jasper engine replacement?
Also before rebuilt transmission?

Well tell you the truth the fuel injector cleaner has only given me about 1.5mpg (at the most) more and it only lasts for like 1 month, but being only about 4 bucks it makes up for it. It recommends using them after every oil change though which is what i do.

The jasper engine, the rebuilt tranny and rearend...... I have no info on that because I bought the car after the previous owner did this...... (talk about saving lots of money for myself)

Sounds like the injector cleaner is hitting the right spot somehow.
Ever little bits helps.
There may not be much that will help besides like proper tune up and driving habits.
A few things to check would base timming. AC-delco plugs and good plug wires fuel and air filters and make sure computer sensors are in good working order.
Map sensors and tempture sensors and TPS sensors are one of the main ones.
To much Exhuast back pressure will hurt mileage to.
On the trans make sure lockup is working good.
If the rear end is geared to low will kill gas mileage. Sometime tire sise maybe taller tire. Even brake dragging makes a difference. Little things add up.
Back to the injector cleaner helping a professional injector clean job might help but could run the risk of some damage to fuel pressure regulator.
Or on the other side keep your eyes open for a new/newer one that gets 20-25 MPH but test drive it a tank of gas first.
Good Luck MT
